Sky Multiroom Question

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
I'm having HD fitted tomorrow and currently have Sky+ fitted downstairs. When the engineer comes to fit HD tomorrow he is going to switch out the box downstairs and use the old one (Sky+) upstairs for me.

My understanding is the two boxes need to be connected? Is that just by satellite cable? How are they connected? Are they likely to just want to drill through the external wall upstairs and run cables down the side of the wall to hook up with the feed downstairs?

Both boxes need to be connected to the dish and telephone lines only, not each other.

  Go cry to your momma!
Which means yes, they'll need the drill the external wall.

If you don't want them to and you want them running in the cavity, you need to arrange this prior to the install with a 3rd party.

cheers guys, external wall it is. Telephone lines won't be connected (they play havoc with my adsl speed) they state its a requirement in the contract but I've never had an engineer insist on it.

If you don't have the phone line connected they'l charge you full price for the upstairs,

They did it to us for 9 months until my Dad said about it to me, took me ages to get my money back from them though!

don't understand that? I'd notice the extra fee straight away, I'll see what the engineer says, but I'm expecting him to install it without one.

Basically it was going through there system as the full package twice, rather than the mutli room so instead of paying £10 extra, they were taking £45 for my room.

The line has to be connected at all times otherwise you'l incure the charge, I could give you their CEO's email & he'd waiver the charges for you so don't worry about it!

they will connect it to a phone-line so they can do a call back to pair the card with the box!

He won't install it if there's no access to a phoneline where the box is to be situated.

It's a requirement that all multiroom boxes be conected to the same phoneline and that the number is not withheld, the boxes will periodically call back to sky where they can verify that they're all connected to the same line and therefore in the same household....it stops subscription sharing.

I've had 3 different multiroom accounts over the last few years, my Sky engineer friend told me to leave the phonelines in for upto a month while they do the usual callback routine then it's fine to take them out, never had any problems with mine after they have been disconnected after the 1st month.

LOL at the responses. Only one box needs to be connected, which will be your main HD box, unless you want to use interactive or book films etc..

He can pair the new card with the Sky+ box first were it is then put the HD box in place and do the install on that. It'll save him the time of running the telephone cable too!

He'l get billed for the full package twice rather than multiroom then!

Exactly what happened to me!

My partner had multiroom at her old house when she lived with her parents. We moved into a house together, bringing her multiroom box and connected the sky box up to the existing tennants dish. Her parents rang sky to ask if this was ok and they said it was fine as long as they knew where the box was installed.

I personally thought it was a bit odd that they said that, but ney mind!

+1 to this. my step dad and brother are both sky installers, this is why i dont have a box in my room, i have got a tvi link which they will fit for you for a twenty quid back hander usually. only prob is what is on downstairs is upstairs but you can use a sky remote, might not suit everyone.

just to piss you all off, i just got a family deal which inludes
all the channels
all the hd channels
250 gb box and free installation ( not that they needed to )

£24 a month for a year and at the end of it i will just start again in the mrs' name. luvly jubly.

They do ideally constantly need to be connected to a phone line to save a lot of fuss! Sky send a pulse down the phone line randomly if they find that you have multi room and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc box isnt connected then they will bill you for 1, 2, 3, 4 etc boxes. For all they know the box could be at someone elses house and your giving them sky for 20 quid even though it costs you a tenner!

I have a box in my room that isnt connected to a phone line however i have to take it downstairs to do a call back roughly every month. A guy i used to work with has a box at his house on his dads subscription and he takes it back to his dads to do a call back every month.

Its because a lot of people were taking the boxes to other locations here or abroad to the holiday homes on there subscription at home.

Theres a lot of other alternatives to having boxes in individual rooms but sometimes it will work out better just to have the feed/feeds from the dish run to the room and connected to an induvidual box. If your aerial system is ran through your house via a di-directional amplifier then your can save money just by having a tv link over a RF Channel

I used to work for a bandit satellite aerial firm when i started and we used to do a lot of home distribution work.

Feel free to correct me if im wrong i rushed this im on my way out!

Lol.

All multiroom boxes have to be connected to the same phoneline so that sky can verify that all boxes are in the same location. It's a requirement of your multiroom contract. As said above, if sky can't verify your boxes are in the same location, they'll send you letters telling you to connect it otherwise they will start charging you full subscriptions for the boxes they cannot verify.
