Small black cable into side of battery?

Hi,

Just swapped my old battery out and left this unplugged as the new battery has a black cover over it and I'm not sure this cover should be removed. What is it for and should I connect it up? Car went on a lengthy drive after to ensure the battery was fully charged and I've had no lights etc. on the dash.

Iirc , it's a breather pipe that connects to the battery to vent any gases away .

As above, it's battery breather, the fumes given off are toxic, but can't see it being a problem under the bonnet, it's not exactly air tight under there.
