Smelly 172 Cat!

Hi,

The last few times i have started the Mk2 172 up the cat has really ponged

with the inside of the car smelling bad. Soon clears but this cannot be normal can it??

Any advice would be most appreciated, ie just a Reno "feature" or big bill??

Is it a very rubbery/urine like smell?

Not really, more of a fart, rotten egg smell.

Any clues or is cat dead, car has only done 22K!!

rotten egg smell is the smell of a dead catalytic convertor

Bin the cat n just get a Janspeed decat pipe on there with a ktec cat back or something like that!

Probably too much! Could try getting one from a scrapyard? My mate wanted a new back box and Renault wanted to charge him something like £500 for it including fitting. He bought one from a scrapyard for £90 including delivery and got a mate to fit it!

Midlife (Dave), dont change it just because it smells, get it checked out first on a gas analyser. All catalytic converters smell when the engines cold, they take time to warm up before they work properly. I think they smell like prunes though?
