So I just bought a Clio 182 Cup..

  RB 182 Cup,E46 M3 CS
Hi all

Very pleased to say I went out and bought my first ever Renault yesterday and actually thinking about it my first ever hot hatch. It is an 05 Clio 182 cup in racing blue. Just over 59,000 miles on it, all belts and dephaser done by the garage selling the car (renaultsport specialist). I was looking for a 182 FF but the low mileage, rarity and colour were big draws plus the work carried out. I'm sure many people here have an opinion on the 182 Cup! I thought about it quite a bit and as the car is just an occasional runabout for me I'm quite happy to forego the extra spec on the regular 182s.

Good points: Bodywork is in pretty good condition, a few paint chips and some very fine scratches from where it has been washed badly but otherwise looks great. Wheels have just been refurbished and whilst I'm not sure it is OEM the finish is good. New tyres all round, budget on the back and rainsports on the front which is good enough for me. Oil service and new discs on the front too. Drives well, tracks straight, brakes straight, engine strong. Heating and air condition works.

Bad points: Interior is tired, which is not unexpected but I was hoping for better in a low mileage car.

-The heating controls panel is flaking badly and it looks rubbish. What can I do about this, is it easily replaceable? The garage mentioned people spraying them in various colours but I want to keep the car OEM. (pictures attached)
-The stereo works intermittently. Sometimes I get sound from the radio, sometimes there is silence even though the display says a station is tuned. This was noticed at the garage and they gave me an aftermarket head unit. I'd prefer to keep it OEM as before, is it just a case of getting a replacement head unit?
-The washer jets are temperamental. Again, this was noticed at the garage and something was replaced whilst I was dealing with paperwork. It worked at first but then when I tried to use the front washer the fluid would come out at the rear only. Then occasionally even though the motor was apparently working there was no fluid at all. Apparently it is some sort of switch that can stick? That was what was replaced apparently but the fault still occurs. Again, help appreciated because I know this is probably an MOT failure item, and very annoying over winter.
-The glovebox is looser on the driver side of it and rattles when driving. Easy fix?
The last big thing is the exhaust. I could tell it needed replacing and the garage had confirmed it was on the original exhaust. It can still pass an MOT but looks like the passenger side exhaust pipe is hanging lower and I can see plenty of rust as well. Apparently replacing it is expensive and most get a Milltek instead, any thoughts?

It looks like a great little car and already it is proving to be a hoot. It is much easier to steer around town and in traffic than my other car so I'm properly pleased with it. The weather is looking good for at least some of the week upcoming so I'm hoping to get some decent pictures. Unfortunately I'm not particularly mobile being 6 weeks post acl-reconstruction op so I can't get a full detail in for a while to really bring the best out of that paint.

Happy to be a member of the forum too and already learnt plenty about these great little cars

Nice first write up
Washers sounds like new pump required, easy fix. Stereo not sure but defo get it out to check the connections and wiring, could of been bodged. Glovebox the rivets can break or the plastic hinge begin to snap so may need replacing. Heater panel, no idea not up on the Cup ones. Exhaust there's loads of options depending on what your after, personally I run a janspeed on mine which is super quiet which suits me fine.

The washers could be blocked, I changed the jets for some mist ones off of a Fiat I think it was. The originals had stopped working completely and since I swapped them they’ve been perfect.

Oh, and welcome!

Cheers mate. I'm not an exhaust guy at all but I have to say driving around town there's a bit of a lack of theatre at low speeds.. I'd almost be tempted to get a loud one if not just to go with the loud paint ;). Does yours drone on the motorway? I suppose droning isn't a problem on these cars when wind and road noise are so loud.. o_O. I'll check the stereo connectors when I can, how do I get the head unit out.. any specialist tools?

Cheers mate, how do I access these forums? Certain amounts of posts or do I have to upgrade membership?

Trying it again yesterday there definitely is some sort of blockage on the drivers side. I'm wondering whether I can try cleaning out the jets first. Are they easy to remove?

Fastest colour.

Nice mate.

Thanks fella

Welcome mate. Looks lovely and always great to see another 182 Cup, as there’s not many. Lots of people on here talk them down like they are a poor choice but they are just as good as any other 1*2.

Will be keen to watch your progress, there is a guide on here about how to replace the heater panel, it’s a bit fiddling but entirely possible!

The washer jets are very easy to remove, you can clean them with a pin but they will block again. They seem to block like no other jets I’ve ever known.

Cheers mate. I get why they get looked down upon but really we should be praising Renault for making performance versions of their cars cheaper by offering them with less 'kit', but keeping the performance guts. Premium makers nowadays will give you less but charge you more! I'm not a big fan of the cloth trim seats but they seem to be hard wearing so will age better so I'll probably keep them. Heater panel looks like you have to take a few bits of interior trim off to get to it, my most hated of jobs but I'll get round to it.

You need to part with your £12 for membership.
You will soon get it back with discounts & free postage from the traders.

If only the rear screen is washed, it will be the piston jammed in the pump.
Look at the last post on this thread I just added, and take note that the Cups have a different pump motor to the rest of the sports.

Does the CD player work OK?

Cheers Steve, all signed up. Worth it for the bottle opener alone!

I'll take a look, at the moment the washer is intermittent. I reckon it'll wash the front 70% of the time I try and use it. The driver side jets don't work well, one has completely stopped working and the other aims a bit high so bit of cleaning in order.

I haven't tried putting a CD in yet, just the radio. Just getting a tool to remove the stereo to check the connections. Looks like replacement OEM head units are cheap. I've ordered a new heating control panel in great condition, and also some genuine renaultsport floor mats as they were missing.

Check out the CD player, if it is OK, try fitting a direct earth to the casing to improve the radio performance.

Get a Janspeed or Ktec as it is now I had one on my first 182 in 2005 and that was great no drone, I have the Ktec ultra performance now in my track car and with no interior still do not get any drone.
this is what I have now with no centre silencer

this is what I had before

Also keep an eye out in the for sale section for leather and alcantara seats out of a FF they come up regular for not a lot of money, I sold my full set front and rear for about £100 when I stripped mine it will make the interior a lot nicer place to be.

Cheers fella, I had a look at the ktec website earlier. The system with no centre silencer looks decent. As for the seats, I'm going to keep the cup seats for now but I completely agree that the leather/alcantara seats and door cards make it a nicer place to be. It's such a headfuck at the moment, very sporty and eye catching from the outside and then with the interior as it is very bland and flaky on the inside.

Just a note the ultra performance can be had with the black friday code atm KTRFRI10 save about £30

Would recommend the Janspeed exhaust for a 182 - i had one fitted to mine and was just right imo,not too loud on idle or at low speeds, but sounded lovely when you opened her up.
Ive been looking at mint 182's but theres not many about!

Thanks, that's really what I'm looking for. There is the temptation though because I have to pay for an exhaust to get a loud one. I would probably get tired of it though, the missus has a loud stainless exhaust on her Celica and we know she's coming home when she starts the car in the work car park!

+1 on the Janspeed. I like mine. If I was buying again I'd probably go unsilenced.

Sounds like a new pump for the washer fluid? They're very cheap (£10). I remember there's something to be careful about getting from Eurocarparts. Think the one they recommend is the wrong part??

I think that's what the garage was fitting, he explained it to my partner but I was on the phone and her relay wasn't the most descriptive. Makes sense, maybe he did fit the wrong part? I'm going to clean out the washer jets first and see if that helps, maybe back pressure from one of the jets at the front sends water to the rear...

How much more noise are you going to get unsilenced, at all times or just under throttle?
Yeah unsilenced does sound good. Little burbles on slowing down

I do like slowing down burbles... :D

Just under throttle. Doesn’t drone atall really. I think it’s quite quiet in the car, ish.

But my better half always hears me coming home. I have heard the car drive off and I did have thought ‘that sounds ace’ as it went off lol.

Well I haven’t managed to sort the stereo, I think I’m just going to buy a replacement head unit and see if it works, then sell it on if it doesn’t and give in and go to a stealer.

What I have done is fitted the heater control panel bought from mossyv6. Fiddly job but thanks to Woody_xX’s excellent guide I got there. I even managed to get photos of the circles fit into the back of the unit for his guide but i can’t reply to the thread itself?

Anyway here it is, it was dark outside once I’d finished (due to the apocalypse apparently) so not great photos:

Next up, a new gear knob coming this week.. apparently I have to cut the old one off and then glue the new one? Not looking forward to that either!

Hacksaw a 'cross' into the top until you hit metal, then use a chisel and tap it off in sections, best way I found.

Thanks fella, I did it a few days ago and wish I’d read this first! Had a bit of a problem with the new one though, I bought an aftermarket one off eBay for £16 or so. Looked fine but the plastic hole inside the new knob wasn’t big enough to fit around the gear stick? I tried as much as I could to push it on but with no luck. I’ve now glued it on with araldyte, it works fine but clearly isn’t fully on as it should be and it’s winding me up. Any thoughts? The chap I bought it off said take it off again, file/sand the plastic and try again but getting it off now might be an issue..should I just go with a genuine one from Renault.. can I get one from the forum?

Instead of buying another stereo mate - why don't you have a drive over to Sheffield and borrow one of my stereos? See if we work out what's wrong buddy.

Thanks mate, it wasn't too bad in the end considering my complete lack of talent in anything mechanical, electrical or really anything at all!

That is a very good idea, might have to wait until the New Year to do it but a very kind offer! I've heard there are some nice roads between South Manchester and Sheffield! ;)
