So many dogs, so

After selling the Elise, I'm still trying to find a decent 172/ Cup!

Had a look at one today that had:

- Full main dealer service history, yet didn't have a receipt/ proof of a cambelt change. The owner - an honest-looking mature chap, who had owned it since 2005 - didn't also recall the £900+ bill!

I called the dealer who had stamped the SH. They confirmed the record of the services, but no record of the belt change! Can this possibly have slipped through a dealer 'net'??

The other bit I was concerned about was:
- Recent service ... "used slick 50 oil"

WTF? Slick 50? In a modern car? Will it harm it? I'd probably get JMS to do a flush and get this crap out. IF I bought it...

It just seems a bit odd/ fishy to me. Should I be worried? Head says "walk away."

Anyone with a decent car looking to sell? :)

This hunting around shonky motors is really getting me down and is rapidly taking the shine off the 'looking for a car' bit I normally enjoy! :dapprove:

Up to £3.8k.

I do realise that this may be part of my problem, but I know there are some good cars out there for this money (and less!).

Mr.Dallas and Ads both had Cups for sale for ~£3.5k. Both 'looked' cosseted - a quality everyone aspires to find in a used car...

The reason for missing these examples were because I still had the Elise and a wife needing a new kitchen. I'm now more able to jump on a quality car at short notice.

I had exactly the same thing with my 182. The history book stated it had had the 5 yr/ 72k service: belts etc and was even stamped up for it. Although the invoice declared that there were not any belts done. Owner swore blind that they had been done, so I phoned the dealer who confirmed he opted out of the belts. Tool.

The car also had a very high rev limit when I took it for a drive, again guy swore blind it was standard, and sure enough it turned out to have been mapped - not a big deal but the guy was just trying to pull the wool over my eyes. Strangely he then found the receipt for the map etc that he had 'lost' in his desk.

Apparently I own JMS Tuning! Although I do the pretty bits/boring bits/designing bits - James my colleague does the dirty work

I know what you mean.

I have been looking for a mint 172 for the past few months. I gave up and bought a shed of a car again. Some people don't know the meaning of the word mint, and others want rediculous prices for there cars. It's only a clio. I'm not paying £4500 for a 2003 clio unless it's spotless and low milage.

Trouble is, now the 1*2's are dirt cheap, means they are accessable to chavs and the like. Shame as there's no point in me spending £5k, £8k, £10k on a car as I only do 20-30 miles a week if that.

Dont flush the engine with engine flush, just run some clean oil through it as flushing is a no no on Renaults ;)

Hmm, i had the opposite. I was selling the mintest mint 04 plate silver cup, 30k miles, spotless without a mark on body or wheels, cc, new tyres, brakes etc, and all belts done.

Had sooo many timewasters, and monkeys trying to battle the price down and offer me rubbish part ex's thinking they could find something better for £3.5k. I got £4250 in the end, guy that came to see it bought it on the spot.

What doesn't help me is my location. I have to travel 40-50 miles to see any car really. Hence I ended up buying a cheap car off a mate as I got fed up.

But all of the cars I went to look at were decribed as mint, none of them were. Gave up trying to find a decent one.

Pretty much what I've found.

One person's pony is another's racehorse... :dead:

I used to detail my cars as a hobby and I find that it's a bit of a curse - you notice the slightest blemish. You can't be like that at this price point though

I'll keep looking for the right car, sure something will come up that's not Monaco Blue (I LOVE this colour, but my brother in law has this colour! :().

Mine was a little peach mate, although slightly higher miles.

I've had so much interest in the last week since I exchanged it... sod's law!

^ Gutted I didn't come and look at yours mate! Of all the Cups I've seen, yours was one of the nicer examples :)

Along came a spider...

Can you still wait for the 'perfect' Cup to pop up?

And err. always follow your head when buying a car, not your heart.
