I've got a Sony NWA1200 and an iPod 30gb.
It basically comes down to software, iTunes on the one hand is a joy to work with, very easy, stable and quick at it's job. Sony's effort Sonicstage by comparison is a heap of steaming sh1t, however since the early days it has been improved (slightly) and it is functional in that you can move mp3's to your player without too many problems, but it's completely unintuitive and by and large horrible to work with.
With that to one side, the Sony produces lovely SQ coupled with my Shure E3C (OE headphones are also better than Apples), and the winning feature for me in the Sony is, it's ultra compact, the menu system is good (albeit sometimes slow) and most importantly the battery life alone has meant my iPod has stayed in the cupboard for sometime.
In answer to your question, yes it's good.
