Sound Quality.

Need sum help...My sound quality is crap, it cracks and distorts big style.

Ive got a Sony MDX-850 head unit and xplod 6x9s, standard front door speakers and tweeters, standard cableing.

Should i ditch the 6x9s and buy front and rear speakers? I dont really wanna ditch the 6x9s cause there fairly new. Do i need an Amp?

Soz i dont know much about ICE.

Theres a tried and tested route for decent sound quality in a hatch, and that is to have a sub in the boot and two speakers at the front. Ideally you want the speakers to be co-axials, running off an amp.

Others will be able to fill you in on makes and models etc.

Rick - the tried and tested method is almost that, but use components instead of coax

changing the front speakers and the head unit is the easiest way to improve the whole sound of the car, you mention quality, this will never be achieved using 6x9s for many many reasons, but lets not go into that

the headunit you have is not exactly a great one for SQ, as with most sony ICE its all flashy lights and gimmicks, and not enough concentration on the quality of the sound

almost every SQ class car has the same theme, decent HU (invariably Pioneer, Alpine or Nakamichi), stereo amp powering front components and monoblock amp powering a single 10"/12"/13" sub (no 6x9s in sight)

front speakers, buy the best you can afford, after all this is what you will be listening to

rear speakers are not neccessary in a car unless you want to give your passengers a little more treble

What do you mean...The left wire- to the right speaker? and Visa versa?

Have you just swaped ur front speakers in the door cards? Factory Wires?

Sorry for all the questions.

yeah i have the black face mp3 player one! yes my wires used to the fronts are standard but 6x9 wires were changed for something a little better. No i mean in each speaker two wires go in to them and they will work both ways BUT if done correctly one way will sound a lot better than the other way, if u c what i mean, so just make sure theyre wired correctly, i dont have an amp or anything and my speakers r mint, so happy with them, so i imagine you can expect the same from 6x9s too.

basically david wants you to check your wires are wired in the correct phase

personally id ditch the sony kit, replace it with a alpine or pioneer head unit, some decent front components and ditch the 6x9s, this is proven to give a good sound quality as opposed to other options, if you need anything else, get a sall sub (8" or 10") and away you go

sony should have stuck to making home entertainment, where they are a relatively decent manufacturer

david - youve obviously never had a listen to a decent set-up then (ot intending to sound harsh) because the set-up you have is never going to sound good, it will produce noise, but no quality

yeah well its funny you should say that bambam cause i have heard my installers sound system which was all pheonix gold stuff x2 12" subs and x2 amps in the boot with front comps blah blah blah, and yeah sure im not saying mine is as good or goes as loud as that. What i am saying is that mine is a vast improvement on the original speakers. The bass is a lot better and the quality of sound IMO is greatly improved too. I listened to all your advice about getting a sub over 6x9s and decided that you obviously have superior hearing to myself and therefore are a lot more picky about what sort of sound you want. For the money i paid for my setup im prepared to suffer this alleged poor quality noise and wont be investing in a sub as i need my boot anyways. I am very happy and dont feel the need to spend more on a sub or even an amp for that matter.
