Spare time and inlet manifold (pikey)

  Megane 2 GT 165
Before Christmas I won myself a used lower inlet manifold on ebay for 30€ including shipping from France.

Unlike I said on this forum before, I thought why not give portmatching a try anyway. So I went to the gamma (in UK probably like the common WallMart) and got myself some grinding bands for my Dremel. *yeah the inlet manifold finally meeted a dremel*

I didn't make photo's of the manifold before I began, but I measured it and the ports on the engine sides were 46x25mm. On the plemun side 46x26mm with a phat edge on them.

First picture I took was when I got three ports done. Left one is 50x29.5mm the one on the right is 46x25mm. The dark area around the right one is from dirt building up between the manifold and the engine. (size of the gasket)

The downside of using a dremel is that you spend lots of time grinding and nothing really is happening. Just before you fall asleep one port is probably ready. Also you can see the depth I grinded is due to the dremel.

as you can see the dark area is almost gone. Side of the port 50x29.5mm ^^^^

The plenum side ports had a big edge on them which I remove. The inner measurement was 46x26 and outer was 48x28. I smoothed the edge so the transition from plenum to lower inlet manifold will be smoother.

The finished manifold is now waiting for fitting. (probably within 2 weeks)

As you can see the manifold has a pin in it. In the middle on the plenum side (plenum side is the side closest to my meds ;) ) I guess this is to make sure the port will match while fitting?

Anyway as soon as it is fitted I'll post my findings.

PS. sorry for the bad pics....used my phone.

I hope you have'nt just matched that to the gasket size......

  Megane 2 GT 165
What should I have done? I matched it to 50x29.5mm in the middle of the gasket print. All ports are 50x29.5 (to the engine that is)

If it doesn't work it just a waste of time and 30€ = 22.5 UK pounds

If they are the same size as the ports on the head then fair enough but if you match it to the gasket you'll get a step where the manifold meets the head as the gasket is bigger than the ports!

  Megane 2 GT 165
LOL yeah I know! The port in the head are 50x30mm.

When measuring from bolt spacing the ports are spot on. Haven't seen the head of the engine, but I guess the lower holes should be in the middle of the ports.

The other thread about the perfected manifold. The ports a made bigger on the inlet manifold, or that's just to fool us ;)

Sorry fella, I was under the impression you'd just removed material upto the gasket size! My bad.......

mind you i believe i've read in one of Bens' threads that the plenum is the most important to port/match !

I take it you arent able to get at the middle inside the inlet, which would defeat the purpose?maybe im wrong though! you must have a steady hand too because id find it real hard getting each port even using the dremel

  Megane 2 GT 165
@franx

Yeah I read that aswell because there's some bad casting marks inside the runners, but I also read the lower inlet was most important :) We'll see.

Still have that sports cat? PM me!

@Cro-Clio.

The ports might be a bit different from eachother (i'm not a milling-machine). Getting right inside the inlet is impossible yes. Also seen the pictures of matched inlets, and I thought they did not get 100% of the inlet.

It was the lower (?) oops :quiet:

Important not to do just the one anyways;) yep sportcat in the shed

For now I am not planning on getting a RR before and after, however I asked a quotation for it at a company near me.

WTF is redx? :)

  LY 182
you want a step where it meets ideally - wont claim to understand all the flow dynamics etc but i have heard you never want the inlet and the ports a dead match

  Megane 2 GT 165
I heard someone say I need to leave a bit of a step on the inner arc of the inlet manifold. Has to do with flow dynamics at low revs. I tried to leave .5mm at the top/inner arc of the manifold.

If it's s**t I'll bin it....30€ lost.

Fair play to you fella! :D

Was going to try this myself just for the s***s and giggles

Let us know how you find it!!!

An RR would be very interesting also BTW, but i understand they aint cheap so dont blame you if you dont bother!

  Megane 2 GT 165
Well I just asked for an quotation for three RR's

+Inlet
+new software upgrade from fastchip

When it's not too expensive I'll probably do it.

  Megane 2 GT 165
Yeah I already have a remap from fastchip, but didn't get the RStuner-kit. Since then he wrote a new update, which I am going to get.

  Megane 2 GT 165
BTW could someone send me a guide to change the manifold?

felix _ slot at hotmail.com (remove spaces)

I already found something but it's in Frence. Thanks.

Ok,

Took a week longer to get to it, but I am fitting the inlet manifold next week. Also changing oil and filter.

I will post my findings as soon as it is fitted.

Still any tips for fitting are appreciated. While I am at it what service can I give my car?
