i get a spark on the negative terminal of the battery everytime i reconnect the earth lead to it, is this normal???

yes. would be the same as having a loose battery clamp....

There are systems that use power after the engine is off and the spark you see is those items trying to reconect themselves (basically !). Its totaly normal, if the spark is big and you are getting a flat battery then the boot light might be stuck on etc
