Speedo all over the place

Got a few problems with my speedo. Basically i'll be driving along and it will die and then burst into life, go wobbly a bit and then be back to normal.

If I floor it, the needle does not smoothly rise up the speedometer, it leaps.

Is this a problem with the speed sensor?

Can be speed sensor, plug going into speed sensor or wiring. In my case on the first occasion it was the sensor then on the second, the plug, and on the third, the wire running from the ECU to the dash had broken just below the battery before the engine bay fuse box. On mine the green wire coming from the sensor plug runs to the ECU where it joind with a thin green wire heading for the munti way plug in the engine bay fuse box then to the dash.
