Speedo drive cable! HELP

  White Evo V
I have just bought a 55 plate Trophy gearbox for my 02 plate 172 and upon fitting it there is no hole for the speedo drive cable!

Is there anyway to link it or convert it as IIRC the other type is on the ABS ring??

HELP needed ASAP as I need it done today if it can be done!??:S

2 options: run 182 abs setup or open up the box and build one with the worm drive from your old box, you might have to swap the diff too!

Easiest thing to do is to get the right gearbox as both of the above are a right ball ache

Bugger! Problem is ive already bought the box! Stuck what to do? How hard is it to put the 182 ABS set up in? Whats parts would be needed?

I'm not entirely sure, it might run through the ecu in which case you'd need a new loom & ecu, keys, uch and other associated bits! If not it might just be a case if some wiring and some luck.

If you want to run the cable you'd have to split both boxes and put all the gears and selectors in from the 182 box into the 172 then use the 172 diff and worm drive.

My 172 diff is fooked aswell as my 172 casing - the diff went through it! So I cant use that! Would the worm drive off the 172 diff fit onto the 182 diff?

You need number 2 on your diff for it to work. Then number 9 & 10.

Then you'd need a casing with the hole like this

What copy of dialogys have you managed to get running on windows 7, or is it vista? Was it hard and where could I source a copy?
cheers (apologies for hi-jack)

2.8.8 uber old copy, it is windows 7, I've got a newer copy but had trouble getting it to run, it doesn't like the java.

ah, so they are still really picky about what systems they run on? iirc it needs an old version of java, no adobe reader (or something), etc etc the list goes on.

I have dropped the box off at a local specialist who has rebuilt my boxes in the past, hes going to have a look at it for me, he said his 80% sure it can be done, Guess il find out tomorrow! The casing from my 172 box is cracked but the side with the hole in for the cable is ok IIRC! I dont know the code off the 182 box but I know its off of a 55 plate Trophy so if anyone knows what boxes they run it would help, possibly a JC5?

Does that mean my 172 gearbox was a JC3 looking at that Ebay advert? So do the Williams and 1.8 16v mk1's run the same boxes as the 172/182?

Yours will be a JC5 too mate, its the 3 numbers after that matter.

JC5 129 is a 172 cup gearbox with the worm drive for example.

The williams runs the same box with different ratios, very very similar to the 172 cup gearbox ratio wise and is a JC5 with the worm drive

Let us know how you get on.

Wish id of known this before I bought a box!

I was wondering if they all had the same ratios? Whats the best box for acceleration then? not fussed about top end! and whats the trophy box like ratio wise compared to my original box?

How do you find out what type you need before buying?

Look and see if there's a speedo cable going into a hole on the gearbox (the skicky up bit next to the clutch) If it has you need a box with a hole and worm drive.

Mk1 clios had a manual cable that ran off the worm, mk2's had an electric pickup from the same worm drive and later mk2's had no hole and ran the speedo off the ABS

Does anyone know anywhere where I can find information on what ratios all the boxes run: cup, williams, trophy and std 172/182?

Im worried about this box! If the specialist cant use my worm drive and casing from my 172 box im screwed! Il have no choice but to install it and run the car with no speedo! I cant afford another one ATM and I havnt got time to wait till I sell that box becuase I need the car! :banghead:

Sorry, gear ratios are the same across the range. It's the final drive that differs.

I don't know which box a trophy runs so I can't tell you the final drive.

Finaldrive.jpg

JC5 129 and 130 on the left and JC5 089 on the right

129/130 has a final drive ratio of 4.07
089 has a final drive of 3.87

Apparently

JC5-089 = ph1 non cup (dont know for ph1 cup if there were one?)

JC5-129 = Ph2 cup

JC5-130 = 172 ph2 non cup + all ph3

final drive and ratios should be the same if the trophy box is a 130

It was registered on 06/06/2002.

I seriously hope the specialist can fit the worm drive to the 182 diff! Will save soooo much hassle!

If the final drive gear is a smaller ratio will this mean the revs will climb faster in 5th gear but not as much top speed? If its the larger ratio on the final drive will the car be more economical on motorway runs? Or is it not a big enough difference to notice?

Which means my original box must be a JC5-129 and my new one a JC5-130?

I think theres an option on clip to pick where it picks the speedo drive up from on early 172's that have both systems. Either abs or tranducer.

  Megane dci 130
I mean Renaults diagnostic machine (called clip) can go into the Instrument panel and change where it picks the signal up from on models with ABS and the diff pickup.

  White Evo V
Is mine one of them models seen as though it has ABS and diff pickup? So if the gearbox had been fitted, using clip my speedo would of worked? Would I of had to install any other parts for it to read off of the ABS?

  White Evo V
no other parts needed, just a software change basically

Ah I see! I think the gearbox specialist has sorted it today. He put a worm drive onto the 182 diff and drilled a hole in the casing for the cable as its the same cast as the worm drive casing with no hole apperently. Just waiting to hear confirmation thats its done! :D

You're very unlikely to find a specialist wit a Clip. Only one I know is rentech in Portsmouth.

Where is k-tec?

I am getting the car back tommorow.

The garage have told me that it won't work.... but I have been told by a local renault specialit that it will as I have ABS and as it has ABS; by default it will take the speed information from the ABS sensors???

Can anyone shed any light on this pleasE??????

  172 cup TT
good to hear its looking positive!... sorry for hyjacking but i need to somehow get a speedo reading too.. currently driving everywhere with my satnav on to know the speed.

My clio is the one with the Audi engine in it - god knows how to and where to plumb the speedo into
