Split Shocks

Hiya, just wondering if anyone can help, heard a rattling in me car today and when i got home i had a quick look over and found that my drivers side shock absorber was a bit knackered, well at least i think it is. It just that the rubber bit thats all around the top is totally split in half. Its not leaking (i dont think) and the metal bar inside is fine but the rubber cover is all split and in pieces, Is this a serious problem or can it wait a week or two till i get paid??? That rubber cover is just to stop shite getting on the metal pole that moves up and down, so this won't be the direct cause of any problem you are having but due to the split it may mean shite is getting on the pole and perhaps after time that could cause a leakage.
