Split thumb grips...

  RenaultSport clio 172 CUP
The thumb grips on my steering wheel are split and falling apart. Anyone else had this happen? And is the only solution a new steering wheel...?

Yeah it's normal mate most steering wheels suffer from it along with melting to the actual steering wheel! One option I found recently is if you look at eBay item 300358662589 the guy makes thumb grips himself and sells them. I can't tell you what they're like but obvioulsy it's a much cheaper option then a whole new wheel!

I've used a different approach to tthis one. I used to work in a skate shop years ago, and we sold this stuff called shoe goo. It's thick but still runny rubber solution in a tube. Fixes shoes messed up by skating. It also bonds the thumb grips on the wheel back together a treat. Doesn't look perfect, but looks ans feels a lot better.

Yeah, I could glue the bits back on if I still had them... The rest of the steering wheel is not in a great state of repair tho - has anyone put on aftermarket wheels with airbags?

unless any of the other Renault wheels fit and function (??), i don't think there are any aftermarket airbag options (someone may know otherwise)

these GRP grips are OK, but they're not as good a fit as the OE rubber ones due to the nature of the material/moulding
