yeah it is if you just want to paint them mate. i work in a bodyshop too and we also do minor refurbs. but if they are quite badly damaged and need welding up its ussally cheaper to get a new rim. but other than that we just give them a good clean to remove the crap so we can see whats dirt and whats damage. then flat out the scratches with some 180 grit and stopper if needed followed by some 320 grit. then primer and the 500 grit over the whole face of the wheel. we then do the edges and inside with grey scotch bright before cleaning it again. then mask up if it needs it and paint it with the same paint we use on the cars.

Just dont scrimp on the sanding. It does take ages but you get far better results that way.

I refurbed my own and whilst the priming and spraying job was really good for a garage and rattle can effort, I rushed the sanding and filling process and it left a lot of scratchy areas which bugged me and could have been avoided with a few hours more labour.

sanding is deffo the most important part.

i started with 240 grit, then 320
filed any kurbing, then sanded with 180, 240 and 540 grit
primer - 2-3 thin coats
another quick sand with 540
primer 3-4 thin coats
base colour
clear coat

quite a few scratches tbh, but saved myself 200 odd quid, and ive taught myself for the future now.
next time id deffo spend more time sanding.

no pics atm, im gonna do a project thread soon though be on there
