Squeaking clutch pedal

  1995 Mondeo Speed Machine

Everytime I depress the clutch it makes a sort of squeaking/groaning type noise. it doesnt do it when I come off the clutch though, and it only seems to be for the first centimetre of travel.

Anyone else had a similar problem and does it sound like it could lead to bigger problems?

Any help will be much appreciated.

I had a very similar thing with my RSi mate. I took it in to my local mechanic and explained the problem to him. He took the clutch apart but couldnt find anything wrong with it at all. He checked the cable, the mechanism, etc. I cant remember exactly what he checked because Im not really up on the mechanics of a car, but he must have listed at least 4 or 5 common causes for the squeak, for which, he found no evidence. The only thing that was picked up on was how stiff the clutch was. Again, the mechanic said it isnt anything out of the norm. In fact, I havent heard the noise for a few weeks now. It just came and then went.

Does the noise occur everytime you change gear or does it only make the noise when you change from 1st to 2nd and then 2nd to 3rd?

It happens in every gear, I think the sound is coming from the pedal, rather than the clutch itself.

If its coming from the actual pedal and not the clutch I wouldnt really worry about it that much. If youre still not convinced I would take to either a Renault dealer or a local garage to get it checked out (just to be on the safe side).

If it squeals continuously when you have the clutch engaged, more than likely a dodgy/dry clutch release bearing. If it only happens momentarily as you depress the clutch pedal, probably the pedal cable mechanical assembly. If the later, try squishing some oil into all the pedal wiggly bits (new technical term) both at pedal and g/box clutch lever!

The clutch pedal is on a rocker, which pivots inside a bracket which is attached to the body. Between the pedal arm and the bracket is a plastic grommet. This plastic grommet will start to squeak through wear (like a cheap excercise bike).

If you squirt some WD40 into the grommet and it stops for a while then it is nothiing to worry about. You can ignore it and just apply grease to it next time.

Yoiu couldtry to replace the grommet but it probably isnt worth it. The squeak lets your wifey-type know when you are about to change gear.
