SSD Macbook Test

Made up 3 of these today only 2Gb of ram in each, 80Gb drives. Solid state is amazing, very fast, took 15 minutes to load Leopard (minus print drivers) battery life seemed to be massively improved and this drive claimed a life expectancy of 1.2 million hours which is around 130 years!!, Not cheap yet but clearly going to see alot more of this kind of thing in the future.

This test gives you an idea of how quick SSD is.

Cool, got SSD in my Dell, lovely and fast.

Considered a refurb Air before I got it, but was put off by the battery being integrated, non-removable and non-(user)replaceable.

Mines 120GB, the big capacity ones were really quite expensive just a few months ago, still pricey?

Was concerned by the lifetime limit of writes, but read an article that worked through the calculations and as you say, is in the hundreds of years region!

I still think this is the best value upgrade for most laptops/desktops around atm.
Will have to invest myself soon

SSD's are going to be a big step forward for computers in general, imo. And hopefully their popularity will mean that prices plummet and capacities increase, quite quickly.

Haven't got one yet, but will be doing (probably at work) in the near future.

their read speed is very fast but their write speed is average i believe.

you can get a 73gb one for the HP EVA SAN now and the list is £20k per disk......

Prices will invariably come down soon, i imagine we will see some nice sized cost effective SSD's next year at worst.

We have an SSD Air at work and to be honest i wasnt that impressed on performance etc but they have played a big part in bring down production costs, its a stunning machine, very reliable, from their release i can count the number of repairs we've done on them on one hand. They have a whole list of valid limitations the battery is one lol.

The drives i used in the Macbook's cost £329 at cost but early next month i believe i can source a similar sized drive for around £250 ? cant remember.

Definitely the future, but I'm sure I saw an article on Tom's the other day that found a drastic loss of speed in all of their long termers after a year. Something to do with the way discarded info gets dealt with? (Technical eh?!)

I'm gonna have to pop and see you sometime Clio Kid!

My unibody macbook needs maxed out RAM and would love a SSD as was looking into upgrading to a 500gb HD. Maybe wait a bit longer! haha.
