Steering lock problem

Just recently my steering lock has started clicking when driving. I can feel it almost engage as I turn the wheel some times. It's a bit worrying that it could come on when I'm driving!
I haven't taken anything apart to have a look but I'm thinking I might just remove it anyway. Has anyone got some advice on on what I'm looking for when I take the plastic covers off?

I would be taking it straight to a garage personally. That's worse than the accelerator sticking down on the Toyotas!

It is fairly easy to remove. You need to remove the key barrel and then split it in two. It is pretty obvious what to cut.
