Steering noise... Any ideas?

  BMW M3
Been hearing recently that i get a clicking/clonking noise when manovering the car at slow parking speed and almost on full lock. Had the car over a year and has never done it and is not the same thing as that common problem with the car jumping/hestitating on full lock.

It seems to happen once per wheel cycle and not every time so i'm pretty stumpted.

What worries me is that i experienced a similar noise in a 1990 Ford escort that had been driven into and moved the wheel. Never found out what the problem was as i scrapped it.

I changed the discs and pads about a month ago so dont think it has anything to to with that.

So anyone got any ideas to what the problem is?

The car is a 04 182.

Thanks

i have this too, what is it, at first i thought it was the suspension thing everyone goes on about. so left it, but what your saying is what ive got.

what is it anyone

Can you see any rubbing on the arch liners? Do you feel anything through the steering when you get this noise?

Been out to check the car and visually everything is fine. Nothing loose and no marks on the arch liner. I'm thinking then it must be internal which i dont like the sound of. Was doing some tests on my drive and noticed that it even occured when going straight once.

Its like a "giving way" clicking noise, if you know what i mean lol. Can also feel it through the steering wheel and pedal... Help !!!

That happened on mine!! I took it back to Reno and they fixed it under warrenty. Its was something in the steering column!

Take it to Reno in Edinburgh Justin!

Suspsenion mounts are faulty. Renault have a modification to fix this.

Quite a few posts on the forum about it.

Edit - Engine mounts aren't the cause. They may make a noise under acceleration/deceleration but this is clearly the suspension mounts.

I had the suspension mounts fixed about 9 months ago which previously cause a squeaking/rattling noise on full lock. That doesnt happen now. It sounds more like louise's problem within the steering column. Will take it in tomorrow and mention that louise, thanks :).

The "clicking" noise you are hearing is the suspension springs turning in the mounts. While they may have fixed/modified part of the problem your symptoms definately match the traditional problem.

Doesnt a faultly CV Joint also perfectly match the clicking symptom? Thought these were meant to last ages... i really hope its not that.

Would this noise also come in a straight line Griff ?

Thanks for all the help. Car is going into the garage tomorrow for its 2nd (same corner) shock so hopfully they can diagnos the problem.

If the surface is rough then yes it could happen mate. Obviously if the surface is perfectly smooth then perhaps not.

hmmm.. all very confusing. I have put up with renault purely because of the enjoyment of the 182 but their really starting to annoy me. I should have a loyalty card, the number of times ive been back to renault for problems lol.
