steering problem? clicking?

  182
hello,
I have a problem with my steering on my 1.2 16V Clio Dynamique. When i turn the wheel from lock to lock, stationary or moving, a horrid crunching a clicking sound comes from the surround arounf the steering wheel. I jus recently change the clutch, and had o remove the steering rack to drop the sub frame and gear box, does anyone have any idea why it would make this noise, and does anyone have any suggestions of how to fix it?

Thanks

if its like a click noise that you can kind of feel through your hands my old 1.4 used to do it, never got to the bottom of it though sadly.

check your shock mount and the bearing? how stable is your steering when you go over rough road?

OK guys,
I finally got to the bottom of it. Behind the steering wheel in the middle of the stalk assembly is a coil which allows the horn and airbag wires to rotate. It has a system in it which only allows it to do 2 full turn either way. It has clips to locate it onto the back of the wheel. When we removed the steering shroud we found pieces of broken plastic. now we decided to remove th steering wheel. After getting the airbag out and the steering wheel off we could see the problem. The device that only allowed the steering wheel to be turned a total of 4 times was out! The wheel was straight ahead, but according to the little and the 0 was a whole turn out. This had meant that when the wheel was turned hard left, it had forced things further than they where supposed to go and hence the lugs snapped off. I need my car for Xmas so we glued the pieces back on and strengthened them with epoxy. as well as resetting the small dial back to central with the wheels central. Everything is now fine!!

Just thought i would tell you this, as in the Haynes manual to do a clutch change it tells you to remove the steering rack, and i just wanted you all to be aware that just straightening the wheel and centralizing the rack then putting it back on is not good enough. You need to set the wheel straight ahead when you remove it and do not move the wheel!!!

yeah the srs cassete issue is the same on all cars equipped with it - its not really a problem aslong as you are aware of it.
doing a clutch on any of the clios i dont tend to take the rack down.. but whenever you are working with the steering all you do is take the key out and engage the steering lock then mark where the steering was at the bottom of the column. or, if you do come unstuck (and an apprentice spins the wheel:mad: ) all you do is pop the wheel off and center the cassete yourself.

it's not always the apprentices fault :p, well aware of it now tho, and will never make the mistake again! Haynes missed somthing out :O is a surprise!!

What on earth do you do then???
first one i did i lowered the subframe down on one side enough to lift it out, but i find it easier now just to push the box as far over to the n/s and leave it sit there and change the clutch through the gap, no need to unplug anything or remove driveshafts i just undo both bottom ball joints to allow the shafts to move over
