steering rack inner track rods (tie bars)

anyone changed their inner track rod ends? (tie bars)

if so, could you give a brief description as to how to remove old ones.

much appreciated,
Rich.

I think he means the track rod (steering arm) itself, not the rod end.

I know Russ_16v has done his track rods/steering rack arms, might be worth a pm. My n/s one has some very slight play in it so i need to do mine at some stage

yup iv replaced both my tie rods and new ends too,to be honest it was a bit of a pain,as there is no space to work with,as the subframe is in the way

depends how seized they are, i've done loads but i bought a specialist tool the grips it you use with a long extension,, to be honest i wouldnt even bother attempting one without the tool

thanks for your replies,

it is the 'inners', the arm with the ball joint, not the track rod ends.

ditz, does your tool grip the bar, or the ball joint housing on the end of the tie bar. (i don't mean track rod ends)

cheers
Rich.

ok. Well the rack is definitely going to be obscured nicely by the subframe. Jack it up take the wheels off and see what you can to through the wheel arch

omitting there accessabilty, i'm wanting to know if they just unscrew from the steering rack, or is there a clip that needs to be removed first, are they left or right handed?

again just to clarify, i'm not talking about the track rod ends, but the track rods.

many thanks
Rich.

normal thread, they do undo but they have a spring/locking clip affair on them that you have to break off (this is done by just undoing it)
once you crack it off its fine.
make sure you fit the new locking washer and plate in the right order and use plenty of loctite

did this on my mk1 (similar setup i imagine)

without the tool its a complete ball ache... luckily i had to remove my subframe anyway so i just bolted the rack to the subframe, firmly attached mole grips, added a long bit of scaffolding to the equation and managed to free it, whilst standing on the subframe...

so yeh, good luck! :D
