sticky throttle cable

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
the cable on my 172 keeps sticking, i thought it was the idle control valve but now i know it isnt as its not just when its idling, anyone know what to do?

You know where the trottle cable sits on top of the engine, its spring loaded, the part where you can rev the engine from under the bonnet if you know what i mean??

Once it starts you can't every fully cure it! You're fucked just like the rest of us ph-quick owners!!

I have had three new cables and a new throttle body too. They all helped but ultimatley the design is floored and the UK spec cars were never meant to run with a long cable, the Euro cars would of had a cable half the length.

The only way you can fix it is to modify the return spring or add one to the pedal to help pull the last bit of the cable through and allow the throttle body to shut fully.

Only problem then is that the pedal becomes more heavy under foot.

One day I will get some pictures of what I did to mine but I haven't seen the car for weeks as it won't start because of the immobiliser, so I left it parked off the road weeks back!

adding a return spring on the pedal will cure it, the TB return spring seems to loose its tension for the last fraction with age, so we just add another light spring to the pedal as that seems to cure it more than anything else.

To check, just get the car into its high idle situation then put your finger behind the throttle pedal, you should only have to very lightly 'lift' on the pedal to bring the idle down. If it does then you can add the spring no worries.

If your wondering what type of spring to use, look at the clutch mechanism ratchet spring.

No one would buy it! :(

I spent a wedge on it instead and now the immobiliser is up the spout but when I get to be in England for more than a week then I will get it sorted and start driving it instead of using my MkIV Golf GTDi.
