stiff brakes

I picked up my mx5 today and when driving it the brake pedal is really stiff and doesnt seem very responsive. HAve to really press it to get decent stopping power.

What could cause this?

Would bleeding the system and refilling solve it maybe?

Try it, bleed them first see if it helps. Sounds like one of the calipers is binding, jack the car up and spin the wheels.

best bet is try an MX5 forums. Id imagine its not going to be something one off.
