"Stop" and Battery light on, Whining on start up and burning plastic smell

had it in and the alternator is still charging. any ideas? the smell isnt coming inside the car just from exhaust emissions

Mine did this it turned out I needed a new alternator and battery.

Sounds pretty much like the alternator is giving up.

Deffo as above, dead alternator and needs sorting fast. Saw this on a Traffic van result in an engine fire... bye bye van! (Blessing in disguise though in that case).
