Stopping a cup

I know the cup racers have the uprated megane or laguna brakes, I think that I might uprate the brakes in some shape or form, I want to be sure of a few things though. If I put nice big disks on and green stuff pads and the works, I dont have ABS, so am I more liable to lock up, or, am I likely to do just the opposite?

If your the sort of person who just puts his floor through the bulkhead when you brake hard then yes, you will lock up. If you use the techinque of breaking/releasing/breaking etc. whilst in straight line, it shouldnt be a prob getting bigger brakes. Do you really need better ones or do you like the look of big jobbos? Fair enough if you like the look of them, i do too but is it worth more insurance and an even higher risk of going through a hedge backwards?

nope, it isnt essential, but I locked up the nearside front when stopping when a tractor pulled out on a country lane. Yes it was muddy, no i wasnt flying down there (25mph) but i think even with ABS it would have jittered a bit. I wasnt near hitting him, but it made me think.

Mmmm, I have a Mk2 and pick up a cup next week. Ive checked over the brakes briefly and cant immediately see any differences. The brakes on the mk2 (and maybe the mk1??) are already laguna/megane parts.

Id tend to agree that not having ABS (particularly when thats all youve ever driven) does mean adapting your technique and adopting measures like kayliegh braking (as described in the post above). But the pedal feel on the Cup is superb, a big improvment if thats what youre looking for.

I too am considering upgrading the brakes for 2 reasons, weight and control. I like the look of Wilwoods Dynalite 4 calipers and rotors. Theyre not expensive if you get them from the US, its just complicated (or expensive) to work out all the measurements and parts for yourself. It would look to cost approx £600 for 300mm discs, Billet alloy calipers, touring car spec caliper brackets and ancilleries...

Anyone else interested in this for 172 series?

All I have is EBC Green Stuff pads, and the car was fantastic around Mallory, with no fade. So Ill leave the discs alone. If it aint broke, dont fix it...
