Stripping a Cup

  Cup and R6
Is it worth it?

I stripped out my very first car (Punto JTD, my god did that little thing fly for a derv lol) so was worth it, but in a car thats already made to be lightweight, is it worth it, and what sort of weight reduction can be expected?

Cheers

if you can put up with the extra road noise etc and will find a benefit for the extra weight lost , ie track days , or accelerating upto the speedlimit very quickly :p then go for it , otherwise leave it porbs not noticable enough to make a diff

Depends how much you wanted to strip tbh. Pointless just removing the rear seats, they weigh naff all.

tbh the road noise wont bother me, if you think its bad in a stripped clio, imagine how a punto sounds with one seat and a steering wheel :star:

tbh as its light already, and roughly 10kg equates to 1bhp, i doubt id be able to get much out of the clio, may be worth trying though, doesnt take long to put it all back together

EDIT : @ Rich anything unecessary would be gone, literally drivers seat and steering wheel!

i thought it was 7kg per bhp , i tried explainin that to some one once and they thought it actually gave there engine more power :S . go for it then dude worst comes to the worst you can put it all back in again

10kg? 7kg? i guess you can never put an exact figure on these sort of things, funny thing with my punto was after i put it all back together i had 4 or 5 bolts still left in my hand, whoopsies :rasp:

yeah no matter what i do i always can gaurantee that i have a left over or 2 , but aslong as it doesnt rattle, spit flames etcs its good to go ;)

Mines not a cup but i've stripped everything out and i'm down to one bucket seat and its a lot quicker off the line once its moving there is not a lot in it. only thing thats left for me to take out is the dash.

If your into hardcore motoring then strip it defo, its the best thing i ever did.

I lost 23kg in my rear seat + isofix bar

The missus lost 40kg in her rear seats, isobar and spare tyre/tools.

My mate got his stripped clio weighed and it was down to 940kg mine should be more towards the 920kg mark. You can increase the power to weight ratio by quite a bit if you can cope with it. I hate mine stripped its so noisy and rattly.

They get a lot twitchier under braking when stripped so becareful if you do it. i actually prefered the handling when standard. mines on eibach sportlines and its still sky high and needs coilovers.

im still in two minds, bearing in mind this car needs to last me at least 5 years now, ill probably end up wussing out, and just chuck out the seats lol

cant be as bad handling wise as my old punto, they were scary times, shopping trolley comes to mind lol :rasp:

Probably not as bad as the punto but you will be doing a lot higher speeds than in the punto if you drive anything like me.

im restricted to low speeds untill i get this cambelt done :(

fair point about the punto, however it did hit 60 in high 7's and top of around 130 (off the clock however) i loved that little car it was such a sleeper and a derv! lol

I have a 182 FF and it now weights under a ton with a dribble of fuel in it :) Thats from stripping and other parts that make it lighter.
Strip your car mate, cheapest thing you can do to make your car faster.

Ive stripped my rear end completely, belts, plastics, seats, isofix bar and it does feel more responsive, also replacing my heavy front seats with buckets that weigh half of the original seats, obviously the cups front seats dont weigh half as much though! Wanted to remove all the carpet but as my car is used for everything, not just me ragging it about I think the extra road noise from loosing the carpet will be to much.

I stripped mine, which is non-cup but it did make a big difference. Just felt too skittish. The noise isn't that bad if you have standard exhaust tbh.
