Suddenly car won't unlock/alarm stays armed :/

Went to open the car the other day and the keyfob wouldn't unlock the car :?
Replaced the batteries in the fob but the problem is still there.
I could get in through the passenger door, but the alarm couldn't be disarmed and woke up the sleeping neighbours..
Any help appreciated!
PS I had the alternator replaced last week but the car drove and locked fine afterwards, it randomly didnt open yesterday.

When you unlock the car, with the fob, does the passenger door open?

Thanks for the reply - issue turned out to be battery was simply dead...not enough to stop the alarm but enough to stop the key working. Weird!
