Supercharger whine!!

My cup has developed a strange noise and its more noticable inside the cabin. It can only be described as a whine like a supercharger. You can hear it most when you rev the engine and the revs fall away.
The car has had its belts changed etc bout 15k 18months ago.
Could it be the alternator maybe?

We get the exact same thing on our Alfa 147 (i know different car blah blah) BUT its the aux belt pulley on ours. had it go twice in 2 years.

My 172 whines a tiny bit when very cold for a minute or two but goes. I place my bet on the Aux belt pulley though

Mine whines as well and it's more pronounced at 3k rpm in 1st and 2nd gear. As Rory says it might be something to do with the aux belt pulleys.

Im thinking alternator but might as well change the aux belt whilst im at it. I have searched and folks say that its easy to do on a cup has anyone tried it out.

Mine did the same it was the alternator. On mine it had an internal short and was very hot to the touch...

Mine has exactly the same problem when I bought it, turned out to be aux belt tensioner and a bearing/runner.

You can get a aux belt kit from k tec which comes with tensioner pulley, belt and the bearing.

That sorted my problem out anyway.

mine does this, only when im in gear and i let off at anything over 2k.just whines while the revs drop. i had my belts done only 5k ago by the birchdown boys so i would also be inclined to say alternator o PAS pump.
i dont know if it is related but i also get a loud whine when first started from cold. goes after literally 45seconds and its coming from that sort of area.

i'd put money on PAS pump. Can you alternate the pitch by dry steering?

Mine's been having this noise for over 15K. (different from above posted vid though !)

Think it's the alternator because the belt is also starting to slip a bit on cold start nowadays (while the belt is nice + tight, checked this)

I'm going to wait till she goes definately before fixing it.

Mine does it but only when the engine gets warm. Its actually pretty annoying. I've had it checked out though and everything appears to be fine.

Sounds like PAS pump, had the same with mine. Belts changed = no difference. PAS pump changed and all sorted.

To check get a long screwdriver, place it on PAS pump when engine running and if thats the problem you'll hear the whine thru the end of the screwdriver

Cheers will check it out. I did go for a drive this morning and when i got back i noticed the alt was red hot

Sounds like Alt bearings in that case, your lucky because thats easier to change

Hopefully! I have had a prod around with my large screwdriver and there is a lot of noise being transmitted from the alternator so I may look to change that first. I take it thats a belt off job?

your cup has the tensioner on the alternator.Should'nt be too difficult to loosen/change alternator/retighten.

I had same problem. Sit there and rev it at a constant 3k rpm and turn the wheel. If it whines in time with the turning then u have got shards in your steering fluid. Had to flush the pump about 5 times to stop it
