Suspension refresh, which shocks?

Car  Clio 172
Currently got Eibach sportlines, with standard front shocks and weird French shocks that noone has ever heard of on the rear.

Which shocks do I need/are best for the road, with the odd track day. Will all shocks fit, 172 cup, 182, etc? I have a non-cup 172.
 
I've a set of used Cup shocks that have seen about 5k max, if you want to make an offer on them? Was going to keep them incase car ever went back to standard but can't see that happening. Also have a set of Cooksports
 
That's what I did, CookSports and OE Cup Shocks are a good compromise for track days and road, Eibachs are a little less harsh than the CS but slightly less firm for the track too.

I take it the Eibachs are firmer than stock 172 items?

I shall be honest but I am quite surprised at how good the 172 is in stock form around the track! If I end up keeping the car and changing the suspension I am debating the following choices:

-Stock genuine RS 172 stuff
-Cooksports with Cup dampers
-Eibachs with Cup dampers
-Bilstein B14 coilovers

I've had Bilstein Group A coilovers on a 205 GTi with Group N dampers on the rear ; that was a nice setup as a daily, albeit a little soggy up front (it had gravel dampers fitted), but I reckon the Clio *just* is on a par, maybe better.
 
I've just taken off Cup Shocks & Cooksports and they were good on track, I've gone for budget coilovers B14s as I've blown the budget elsewhere - I've heard the B14s aren't so good on track so I may need to change them quicker than expected
 
I noticed I have a leaky rear shock so I take it I have to replace both ? Any advice on which ones to get its a Clio 172 its lowered on springs standard shocks no idea how much or what type other than there red.
Seen pair on eBay for 60 look cheap thou, local auto shop wants 110 for 2, not looked at updated ones yet.
 
Just get Renault ones, £70 for both.

If you want to spend £110, I'll send you a full set of Cup shocks that have seen little mileage
 
I'll grab the Renault ones 70 seems fair better than Chinese rubbish or getting ripped off from my local garage he seems to have got really expensive lately

That is one thing I am considering. But the B14s use monotube technology which I am hoping will make the rear shocks last a little longer since it resolves one issue of twin tube dampers ; cooling.

Have you tried the various setups on track?

As said I shall be an occasional track user and my money will either go towards Eibachs and Cup dampers, stock 172 or B14s :).
 
Hi @RS Charlie I did 8 track days with the cup shocks and cooksports and it was fine, I've gone for B14s now but been told they are no better than the Cup shocks and Cooksports.

I've not tried the B14s on track yet, but if it's true then I'll use them until a set of second hand ASTs come up.
 
@Davyy Did you manage to refresh your shocks, im more than happy with the new OE shocks on mine handles great, just need new tyres for better grip.
 
Ordered 172 cup all round, and currently have eibach sportlines. One of my fronts is leaking a bit and my rears are good condition but a French brand, so i'm hoping i'll see a big difference.

Regarding fitting, it's just a case of unbolting old, and bolting on new? Other than the front springs..

My friend is a pretty decent mechanic who'll be fitting them, just a case of swapping and bolting?

Okey doke. I'm going for standard shocks on my track build. I'll need new top mounts too though.
I've gone with Eibach springs myself as well.

Will just need tracking checking after fitting all the new bits.
 
Yep, it's easy. Hour's work tbh.

Make sure you undo the top mount nut before you get the front off the ground is all.
 
Yep, if you're in a workshop it's a doddle tbh.

Undo the 21mm top mount nut with a buzz gun. Then it's as simple as eff.

Rears take literally 2 mins. Fronts, not much more if you have the proper toolz.
