Switchable live wire/remote/switch question.

  S13
As per my other post, I've got a problem in that I've got an old head unit and it doesn't have a remote out. I've given up trying to guess which is the switchable live into the back of it 'cos I don't want to bugger anything up so that leads me on to this question (unless of course someone can tell me which is the switchable live on my 98 mk2 ph1): Will a simple switch on the power cable do the same job? If I turn it off will the battery still drain out like it would when the power cable was just run to the amp with no remote wire thingy plugged in? Could anyone recommend the sort of switch I should use if this is the case please. I've seen some in Halfords over with their connectors and stuff, are these ok? The Amp is a Kenwood KAC-719.

As you can probably tell I've got no knowledge of anything electrical so simple words and colour codes would be preferable

Thanks,

Rob.

you could use a switch if you want to just get a supply from something that is live permanently then go to a fuse (1A prefered) then on to the remote of the amp

Or, (to avoid leaving it on all night by mistake):

Your cigarette lighter can be used as a signal to switch the amp on/off.

So, you can wire a relay switch to your ciggy lighter and amp, instead of a physical switch between the battery and amp.

That way, as soon as ignition goes on - amp goes on too.

I don't wanna put the live power cable through the remote terminal though do I?! :S

You're saying [switch]----[fuse]----[remote terminal]? What I was thinking it would be was [battery]--(fuse)--[switch]----[batt. terminal]?

Could you explain how this switchable live thing actually works so I've got a bit more understanding of what it does and how it does it please then I might be able to grasp this better. In another post someone said it might be possible to run it from the cigar lighter?

Thanks

Sorry missed that before I posted. Omar you lost me. Run the remote wire from the amp to the cigar lighter one?

you run the main power for the amp (batt --fuse ---batt terminal on amp) then a seperate wire goes to the remote terminal and that is the one that needs to be switched

Aha! Simple enough for me to understand, awesome job. Now I'm interested in this cigar lighter business, which is the wire I'm looking for, and I simply just tap into it and hook up my remote wire? I'll get the father to do this I think sounds too complicated for me already.. Thanks for your help guys btw, keep it coming.

yeah just make you got a fuse after you tap off the cig lighter no bigger than 5A (1A prefered)

Good question!

Err.... get a crocodile clip... and try both.

You'll need to use the + ... (if you have a multi-tester, that's better).

Remembered I got a Haynes with the car, it's the yellow wire I believe. Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated.
