T.D.C sensor ( And my first post!! )

  clio sport 172
Hello everyone:DThis is the first post iv put on here so i hope someone can help me. My clio 172 is currently in the garage getting the timing belt done. Iv asked them if they can clean the tdc sensor too as iv read that they get quite dirty and can attribute to a rough running engine( as mine is slightly rough on idle ). Anyway they told me that they would have to charge me an extra hour labour to do this as its on the crank! So i was thinking about doing it myself when i get the car back. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to do this and how easy it is. Im an engineer by trade so its within my capability but unfortunately im new to clios and dont know too much about the engine's. Would be grateful for any help. Thanks:)

Hi mate,

Welcome to the site. I'm sure theres a guide somewhere about but can't find it. Anyway here's a thread with a pic of what it looks like on the engine and then off the engine.

It is only two bolts. It is located under the throttle body. Note though that it is a characteristic of the 172/182 engine to have a rough idle.I have remapped my car with an RSTuner (Plenty of info on the forums) which slightly raise the idle speed and helps it to be smoother when sitting at a standstill. Hope this helps.

Have they given any indication on how much they'll charge you for cleaning it? It's abit fiddly removing it but it's not overly difficult just got to watch not to drop the nuts holding it in place down in to the engine bay lol

Thanks for that will. Will try that this weekend and let you know how it go's. Just got the car back today from getting the timing belt done and its sounding even rougher than before!! Seem's to be missing even more than before. Im getting a ringing coming from the throttle body so was just wondering if this will be causing me problems too as id say it's fooked! What do you think????

did they use the renault tools to do the job? (have a look at the cam seals on the end of the clyinder head under the throttle body, if they're new, then they will have done it correctly, if they're old and dirty, then they've fucked it up)

Well iv give the tdc sensor a clean and the car's still running rough on idle. The engine seems to missfire alot but only on idle.It also feels slightly down on power too. Im not sure but i think it could be the coil packs????

Iv also checked the seals on the end of the clyinder and there not new!! What does this mean to the engine???

they haven't done the cambelt correctly then, there's your problem, cam timing will be out, can almost 100% guarantee it

they haven't used the locking tools!
