Suzuki SV650
Tried adjusting the tappets on my 91 1.4 RT yesterday, but to no avail, if anything the noise is slightly worse and I tried doing them twice. Firstly I numbered them from the wrong end, from the passenger end first.. Then I realised I had done em wrong so I numbered them from the alternator/drivers end first and tried again but the tapping/clicking noise is so bad I can hear it whilst sitting in my car with the windows up, sunroof open and bonnet closed.
Now for the exhaust valves its 0.25mm right? And on the inlet valves its 0.10mm. How much of a firm sliding fit should the feeler blade(s) be before I tighten the top nut up? Do tappets become noisy when the gap increases or is it when the gap lessens? I heard its better to have a wider gap as even though its noisy it wont do as much damage as if they were too tight.
I used the method given in the Haynes manual, with one of the exhaust valves open (spring fully compressed), you check one of the inlet valves specified, then an exhaust valve, before turning the engine until you move onto the next exhaust valve.
Heard also that it could be my injectors, whearabouts are these in my engine? The noise seems to be coming from my rocket cover so Im quite sure its my tappets, and the tapping gets quicker when the engine revs are increased.
One last thing, to do the tappets the engine has to be cold right? So how long should an engine need to cool down before I can try adjusting the tappets again? And it doesnt matter if its warm/hot outside does it? The engine just needs to be cold right?
Thx fer reading, my car sounds like an old Fiesta, and dats not gud,
Steve.
