Tar

  Clio 172 sport
Due to where i live, south wales, we have quite alot of loose tar on the roads from time to time, Anyone got a good solution to removing small black tar imperfections on the paintwork?

I have all the standard cleaning tools, so any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah my cousin told me about it a while back but i never got around to buying one, do you think it will remove hard tar even when a hell of a lot of elbow grease and a cloth wont?

  None
there is a product for it, i did some valeting many years ago and it was just a liquid you pour onto a cloth, the tar comes straight off, no idea what it was called now though.......search ebay for tar remover, even if you don't use ebay it will tell you the name of it......unless it was just called "tar remover" but i don't think so.

above, autoglym tar remover is the nuts!

I used to agree, then i found autosmart tardis. I would start with AG tar remover and a clay bar, if you find you are getting through too much then consider buying Tardis, just fyi ag tar remover costs around £5 for 325ml, tardis is £23 for 5l but you dilute 20:1 so need next ot nothing to do the job, if you have a local autosmart dealer go down see if he'll give you a sample or if sell it in smaller quantities, they usually are very good.

"Sticky Stuff" from Halfords, £4.99

Spray it on, wash it off.

Best stuff ive came across so far, absolutley effortless

Just to bear in mind that under the tar maybe little yellow/orange dots, if you have these don't waste time rubbing, just go to clay to remove this- its the only way

Autosmart Tardis is what the professionals use. www.polishedbliss.co.uk

Makes the tar run then you just rinse/wipe off with a microfibre towel. My car had ALOT of tar on it in this photo, you can see it running after application of tardis:

Here's some pictures from a Polished Bliss detail write-up...

The wheels were now 95% clean but still needed a bit more attention as there were a few tar spots, so i gave them a quick spray with some Autosmart Tardis - which after a minute or two starts to disolve the tar as can be seen in the pic below:

A quick wipe with a MF cloth easily removes the tar:

AG worked for me but I've been told Tardis does a better job.

Original post on EastsideVW:

Went for a drive up the A93 the other day in the Clio. Got back and the car was COVERED in grit/salt. Fine I thought, I'll nip over to pidge's and foam it up to get rid of the worst of the muck...
tarmuch3.jpg

...once all the grit/salt was removed we noticed the tail gate was absolutely covered in tar spots. The paint and window felt like sand paper with not a clean spot to be seen. I was a bit disappointed when skid detailed the car that we didn't get many shots of tar running (as there just wasn't much tar), but this has made up for it then some!

Tardis is satisfactory!
Then followed the pictures I posted up on page 1, it was awful!

I used a clay bar with quick detailer, it took fooking HOURS. Next time I'll be buying that Tardis stuff I think.

You don't dilute mate. Well i've never bothered. Plus does it mix well with water being a solvant?

ITR is just as good as Tardis, however, I have never found it in bulk. But my car gets so little tar on it, I only use a bottle a year, if that!!

I use ITR but never tried Tardis but so far ITR has removed all the Tar off my car everytime I use it.

tardis works much faster than AG ITR (would be better if they attached a spray nozzle to it really), but essentially the same. AG is probably less concentrated really.

Tardis eats spray nozzles, so i guess thats why they don't bother with them. And it shouldn't be watered down IIRC.

Yeah have heard that too. AG ITR has served me well but I know that Tardis works a lot quicker. If I had a mammoth job on then I would order some up.

It does unfortunately. I got the "sovent resistant" nossle from polishedbliss and it was fooked after a few weeks. I use a standard nossle, and remove and clean after every use. So long as you run water through it should be fine.

It's a good idea that Jonny mate. Bit of a faff but better than spending money on new nozzles every week!
