tensioners/pulleys also need doing when changing AUX belt ??

  RS RIP
I had my Cam belt + aux belt changed 2 months ago.

What surprised me is that my engine still has the "whining" noise on start-up as before the belts were changed. (whining almost dissapears when warm though)

Also when checking the bill there is only the Cambelt-kit mentioned.. nothing mentioned about aux belt, but i can see the auxbelt is new.

I guess they did'nt do the tensioner/idler/pulleys etc.

Am i in danger of still maybe snapping an aux belt (taking out cambelt!) or having one of the pulleys seizing now ?. Should i not also get the whole auxbelt kit done to be on the safe side or is only the belt enough ?

Help :S , worried ...

  Golf GTD Mk7
if the belt is new i would doubt it would snap. If they haven't put new tensioners on its probably not quite tight enough hense the whining.

As far as i know, its recamended to have a cambelt kit - tensioner, idler and cambelt + an aux kit - tensioner, idler and aux belt.

But iirc Renault only stipulate a cambet kit and an aux belt ( as you have to remove the aux belt to fit the cambelt kit anyway.

its the most common job i get in on the RS clios, "i've had my cambelt done but its got a whining noise"

that'll be the aux belt idler then, ALWAYS change the lot

^^ thanks Fred; Is it possible without too much hassle to still do the pulleys / idler etc. or is it another big job ? Is there space to work on this ?

(timingbelt kit is on there, also new auxbelt ; just these things mentioned above need doing..)

Thanks guys

 bare with me;with my little knowledge i'm thinking the Cambelt-kit and the auxbelt-kit are two different kits ? with different tensioners/pulleys/idlers etc. ? Or does the cambelt kit contain al these things ?

  Octavia vRS tfsi
My cambelt was done at 70k, just prior to I purchasing the car. I assumed that this was an all in job. I've literally been at the brink of losing a complete engine at 99k because it seems the tensioners were not done as part of the job.

Do the tensioners.

Cam & aux belt kits are different. To do the cambelt the aux belt has to come off so change both.

  RS RIP
^^ yep but all has already been done.. (cambelt kit) I'm only questioning the auxbelt tensioners + pulleys etc..

can i still do those without too much hassle or is it again another big job ?

  RS RIP
:( Can i change the auxbelt pulleys/idler/tensioner without taking half the engine out like with the cam-belt ?

How much is the job at a specialist or Renault ? (complete aux-kit)

its a horrible job, front bumper off, slam panel out, jack the engine up, loosen the alternator (i find it makes things easier) and loosen the brackets supporting the alternator

then you have to release the tension on the aux belt, using a special tool (everyone makes their own!)

 can't believe this was'nt done when the engine was out already for the job..

I wouldnt get irate about it, its not a specified job to do the whole 'lot', and as with anything on CS that someone says you 'must' do, it seems to have become folklore.

You dont HAVE to do it when you change the aux belt, and only a belt change is recommended in the literature. The kit itself is a LOT more money than just the belt, so if the current items arent broken then it is a judgement call for the owner to spend the extra to safeguard.

There is no set rule, I've seen 182's with 30k and a tensioner/idler that is fubar'd and 172's on 80k with zero issues.

It'll take you about an hour & a 1/2 to do the job.

As I'm currenlty look at prices for the cambelt/aux change this is of interested.

Got home last night and looked at the service book. the book says at 72K or 5 years blah blah that the cambelt including tensioners etc and the aux belt plus tensioners need changing not just the aux belt.

Makes me laugh as when I spoke to a reno garage yesterday they must of only quoted me for the cambelt kit plus aux belt (not kit). Other a spoke to must of quoted for both. Tell by the price.

What worse case if the aux tensioner arn't replaced? Is it a new engine job?

if the auxbelt is shredded or thrown off, there's a 99% chance it wil wrap round the crank pulley = bye bye engine

i almost wanted to start another thread because of what happened to me this afternoon.

Went to the officials, the Renault Dealer, to talk about my "whining + squeeling" . Told them only the aux BELT was done with Cambelt change by a specialist .

I said the Auxbelt-SET would have been a lot better , so i asked for their price of the set ; looked it up in the computer using my cars VF1CB1ND etc. number to be sure the right parts would come up.

By now two people were helping me.

Suddenly they say; "well ; the specialist you went to actually did the job right because there is NO AUX-SET for your car ; the belt alone is what's changed so job done right ! "
"No set available?" i asked .. "No sir, no set for your car available"

..... :eek::clown:

;) I thanked them very much and left before i got angry at the fact that customer knows more then them , who are supposed to be the "pro's"

Now right after i gave my specialist a call, told him that since he done the belt there is a squeel etc. First thing he asked me : "did we do the AUX-SET on your car or just the belt ?"

Got the pulley part from GSF for just under £30 so complete aux kit only £85.

I think the CUP model only needs the belt as it is tensioned by the alternator.

Cheers
