Not a super duper update but an update all the same. Previous owner Rob kept the carpet and boot liners and very nicely dug them out for me. Top man!

Spent a couple of hours refitting. Feels much nicer inside now. The little things!

You must have strong self restraint knowing it's sitting there on the B14s and ready to go!

Unfortunately my father in law passed away a month ago so it's been a difficult few weeks and I've just had too much going on. Was great to take it out tonight for a short drive, hoping to go a run out tomorrow morning possibly Gifford way or down to north Berwick

Sorry to hear that. Hope things are going as well as they can considering.

Tomorrow morning looks like it will be nice. Good idea. Enjoy it!

This has sat for a while....

Car hasn’t skipped a beat in the last 22 months despite having to put up with a major commute for a long period of that. Mileage has jumped up to 159k now but it is now back to local duty only and as such won’t go up much at all for the foreseeable.

Only changes have been refurbishing the wheels and returning the R3 airbox and lightweight battery back to stock.

With the mileage hike and belts due I’ve been swithering with selling it on and moving to something newer but I think I’m sticking by it. It’s been a great car. Maybe this year I’ll get the bodywork gripes cleaned up and continue to enjoy it to the full.

Looks great refurbished wheels make such a difference and silver is the only choice imo

Agreed!! Can’t believe I ran it so long before getting them done. Unfortunately the misses managed to scrape one within a fortnight so will need to take it back to be redone.... such is life!

Just read this thread from start to finish. As a fellow 172 Cup owner, I'm glad you're keeping it, right decision IMO.

Love that last photo, looks so good!!

I had several 205 GTi's back in the day, and still kick myself for not keeping one of them!! I won't make the same mistake with my Cup, such special little cars.....

Look forward to more updates!

In true me fashion, not a massive update! Car going well and enjoying its very quiet life these days. Just ticked over 160k in it.

Wind caught the door and slammed into my house, causing a fairly nasty dink and paint damage. Decided to give it a crack this week. Very pleased with the results, not perfect but much better.

I’m also pleased to report that my brother has landed a lovely silver 172. He’ll be putting a thread up soon.

Time for a wee update. Car is still going strong and has now ticked over 165k. Still makes me turn round to look at it after parking up.

I’ve decided to grab a few bits and pieces and try and improve it a bit in the last few weeks:

- alloy foot rest
- new rear licence plate lamp
- ‘Clio’ mats
- new passenger door handle (thanks daughter!)
- stubby aerial
- rear wiper and motor to retrofit (not tried yet!)
- sealed leaky grommet causing water ingress in boot well. Surface rust cleaned up and sealed with Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80.
- Rear door cards pulled and cavity’s soaked in Wax Oyl.

Now.... here’s the bit I’ve mulled over and finally decided to have a crack at. Parking scrape down the offside rear and lacquer peel and some surface rust on drivers door below the bump strip.

Ive never attempted anything like this before and if the results don’t pan out then I will just get a body shop to do it but for about £50 in paint etc I’ve spent the last few days having a go. Really enjoying it.

Sanded back the surface rust and surrounding area to bare metal and treated with the Bilt Hamber. So far I have painted and blended the corner of the rear bumper; painted the lower part of the driver door and filled and sanded the rear arch where it was damaged.

Tomorrow I will lacquer the driver door and bumper and prime the arch. Reckon it will be Wed or Thurs by the time it’s completed.

I’m not expecting professional results but I’m hoping that it’s going to be more than passable. It’s a clean little car so as long as the eye isn’t drawn to it then it will look great and I will have had some fun and learned something new in the process. Can always call the body shop later!

Will post up some pics when it’s done but here is it so far:

New back box on. Sounds great and is tucked up nicely behind the bumper.

Couple more coats of base on the door and clear coated. Will leave it for a couple of days before sanding and polishing. Fingers crossed for some shine!

Door strips and bullets done.

Bit more work on the filler on the rear quarter but not happy with it yet. Hopefully I can get it better tomorrow.

Cars looking lovely and fair play for taking on the bodywork and rust.

Can you give me some details about how you did the door strips and bullets please!

Cheers.

Thanks Colin. Strips were very easy.
To remove them, open the door and push them back towards the door edge. If that doesn’t work there is a small grommet just inside the door that sits behind the strip and can be used to access and push it out.

Sanded and then primed.

My bullets weren’t keen to pop off so I unclipped the bottom section and then slid a cover over to protect while I sprayed a couple of coats of D43 mondial on the strips. Dried really fast then did the reverse and sprayed the bullets satin silver.

As far as I can tell, the strips aren’t lacquered on the cup so that was them done.

Ive not had a chance to do the rears yet but a search on here suggests they may be tough to take off so I will mask and paint them on the car if I have to.

Don’t be put off, I’m a total novice and did them in about an hour (allowing coats to dry). Easy peasy and makes the car look much fresher.

I got a d43 paint kit from paints4u on eBay.

In other news, I had another go at the filler and managed to get the top section flush and a far better line by removing the bumper on the arch. Little lip there that I will sand down tomorrow but feeling hopeful!

Been a while! Car still going great and will hit 172k in the next few weeks.

Will need to give this thread a proper update but needless to say, I finished off the rear quarter and after a couple of attempts got it looking half decent. I’ll get a pro job done on it at some point but not necessary at the moment. It got some competition as I got another Impreza (MY99 JDM WRX wagon) last May. Perfect two car garage for me.

Gave it a clean today and took my wee pal out for a cruise!

Hi mate, hope all is well and your Cup is going grand!

Yes I’m loving having another Impreza. So much character, fast and fun to drive. I was very fortunate in the circumstances to find this one. Been looked after and had a lot spent. Just needs gold wheels :)

Been too long but fear not, the £1k Cup lives on. Which is more than I can say about the **** rabbit that popped out in front of it.

185’500 on the clocks now and still running sweet. Wonder if there is a higher miler out there?

1K is good going. Just having a look through and it seems to scrub up well. Fair play for sorting the rust yourself. I am just doing the preventative bits to the shell of mine at the moment.

Thanks mate. It’s been an amazing car, so much fun has been had in it.

It’s starting to need a little love again, the rust has been slowed down but will need a proper repair at some point should i decide to do it. All year round use has its drawbacks but gives me more time, miles and opportunities to enjoy it.

Looks great, great to still see you enjoying it. I think there are quite a few popping up now that are bought, tracked then sold after a year.

Strange. I’ve not really been keeping a close eye. I roughly know where the market is at but not the specific cars.

They are definitely something I would consider long term. Still presenting a lot of fun per £ even for something around £5-6k.
