The Apple Watch Thread

Lol, this escalated, what I will say though, is I don't know anyone (other than Roy) whose Iphone lasts more than a day and a half, 2 days at the very most, hence why people charge them nightly. I know plenty of people with iPhone 4 and 5 that struggle to make it last a day.

If you work at home or are at a desk with work wifi and have a desk phone for work, then go home to wifi at home and don't make any calls on the phone and don't have any push email configured or use Bluetooth, then I can see one lasting 2 days. But I'm a power user, I'm on the road constantly and so rely on data heavily, and use push email, I probably receive about 150 emails a day and send about 50-100. Add to that the 400 whatsapp messages I get a day being in groups, the myriad of facebook, text, Twitter and LinkedIn messages and I'm impressed my phone easily lasts a day, it's constantly doing something for a good 10 hours a day.

So I guess I need to bear that in mind when looking at the watch, the watch will be going off all day with alerts, which will take its toll, so if the battery life is said to be 18 hrs, I might struggle to make it last a day maybe.

It's kind of why I'm waiting for gen 2, possibly, to see if the battery life can be improved.

Just got in from a mad party on my mate's yacht. Cocaine and hookers. Battery is flat now though 😧

This would probably be one of the few occasions my battery would last longer than a day. Did you spend the evening on CS rather than feeding the pony?

Had a play with one yesterday. It's the best smart watch I've seen. Which is a bit like choosing the best one armed midget r****d to perform open heart surgery.

Still think they're pointless, guy at work looks a massive star trek convention prick tapping at his wrist. Only feature I could see as useful is tap to pay.

To be fair, I don't think anybody who goes to a star trek convention would even be seen dead wearing one!

I've had time over the weekend to give it a bit of a test.
Results are pretty positive. Both Saturday and Sunday night I still had 50% plus battery life left, the real test will be during the week while at work to see what I end up with at night!
I've made/received a few phone calls on it (while I've been at home, not out and about). Calls have been very clear.
It's been great not having to dig my phone out pocket when I feel/hear it going off for a text etc, just a quick glance at the watch tells me what it is. Responding to texts via the watch is very easy, it has had no problem picking up my accent which Siri on my iPhone seems to have a problem with.

Do you talk directly to the watch, or does it send it to the phone/headphones?

Talk to the watch, you don't have to walk about with your wrist to your mouth. Had a conversation with someone while I was typing on my laptop and the call worked perfectly. Even dictating a text my wrist was sitting on laptop and didn't miss a word I said.

Just curious as to how people are getting on with the apple watch? I'm ever so slightly considering one;)

Walking into Apple Oxford St London on May 23rd and spoke with a guy who worked there who had just received his 2 days previous. He said he'd ordered on release day. Apparently Apple can't make them quick enough and every style is completely sold out.

I went and tried a few on. It looked and felt stupid, and made me feel stupid having it on my wrist.

Went and bought a nice new Seiko for half the price. Then looked at my phone for anything I might have got my 'watch' to do.

I'll get one in a few years, once they have a genuine purpose whilst your phone can remain at home. Oh, and don't look gay.

I was at Race for Life yesterday with the wife and I saw my first Apple Watch in the wild.

Looked properly s**t with the fashion band, was not impressed.

How many people on here actually have these then?

I stopped in apple the other day and tried on a few different straps. And despite my effeminate wrists, I'd need the 42mm watch if I was to get one :(

I wasn't as big a fan of the stainless strap as I thought, it's not as good in person... Or it just doesn't suit me.

They don't do the modern buckle for the 42mm ones.

I think I settled on the magnetic leather strap. In black, as the brown is too light and blue can get tae feck.

£550 still though :( which is a lot to feel like an Eejit in public, not have to check my phone as often and to pay for things occasionally.

I still haven't seen one. Went through a phase of maybe... but never committed, and I don't think I will. I do have a Microsoft Band though, which I know is a different kind of product but I must admit it's easy to get used to getting notifications on your wrist. Do miss it when it's not there! I find it hard now going out at the weekend with my TAG on without having the Band on the other wrist, which I want to get out of the habit of as tbh it does look s**t lol.

I bought myself an all black sport watch whilst I was on holiday in Florida, thanks to a strong exchange rate it cost me approx. £270. Have been using it quite a lot, the handsfree calling is pretty useful whilst in the car as I don't have bluetooth.

Treat myself to a blue sport band today and it contrasts quite nicely imo.

I thought I'd never have one, I just couldn't see the point of this product... Managed to talk myself in to wasting some cash in the end.

42mm Sport in Space Grey and I've got to say, it's actually pretty cool. I've turned off all notifications except for email and SMS and I get two days out of a charge. I've yet to find a situation where taking a call on it is acceptable but dictation is simple/highly accurate and Maps navigation is brilliant.

So glad I didn't buy the Stainless Watch to as I'd have felt massively let down paying £960

Calls have to be in a really quiet environment to work well. It is handy if your device is in another room and you just want to take the call and quickly move to your iPhone to carry on with.

A Bluetooth headset looking like a nob?

Not every car has Bluetooth!
I'd rather have a Bluetooth headset and actually be able to use the phone if necessary, than use a watch lol. But I put Bluetooth into every car I've owned.

AFTERMARKET HEAD UNIT y000000000!)!!!!!!!1

Anything is better than a Captain Scarlett headset.....except talking into your watch like you're Dick Tracy.
Because it's 0% Tracy

It's amazing how people change their minds when they actually use one. :)

To be fair he said it looked s**t, but then says it works well.

It's like how I feel about the new Focus RS... looks terrible in my opinion, but I bet it's an awesome drive!

As above, I only said I didn't like the look of it with the fashion bands. I honestly never saw the point of it at launch... In truth, after owning one for a month now, I still don't fully see the point of it but I fancied wasting some money on a new toy and this kind of fitted the space. I'm just glad I didn't spend on anything more than just the Sport as I'd have felt proper done over as opposed to just "done". Someone else said they didn't like the look of the stainless bands in person and I agree there to as they look rubbish when you get hands on.

I do love the Apple Maps integration though, that is properly brilliant especially with the Taptic feedback engine thing. It is also handy having a notification when a new email comes in, which saves me having to walk in to the office only to find out i've got an offer for more Viagra. I've tried using it as a fitness watch to and other than playing Squash, I cannot get on with it and always go back to my Polar GPS/HRM for running with. SiRi on the wrist is slow but works well and the voice dictation is brilliant which makes sending SMS a breeze to whilst i'm under a car.

Despite it being a "needy" gadget I still give it 7/10. Hopefully WatchKit 2.0 will make them a bit better to.

I'd feel let down losing a grand on wrist-furniture that doesn't have Tag or Certina written on it.
Although, admittedly, you'd nee to have a full-fat Apple Watch or maybe 2 pauper-spec ones to even get your foot through the door at a good watch shop.

Thing is, anyone who is really in to mechanical/automatic watches is never going to buy something like this anyway are they? Even some of the older G-Shocks are holding good value but it wouldn't attract the attention of a mechanical freak. I've got two Omegas (SM and a Speedy) myself along with a nice Seiko Auto and a titanium Citizen Eco-Drive. They're not the same but they do tell the time and date... my wife thinks i'm a massive wanker for paying what I do to have the Omegas serviced vs the time I actually wear them.
