172 ph1 - the car that has defined the evolutionary route for the later models.

However as Inferno says the ph1 V6 is close behind for the sheer madness - something we will almost certainly never see again :(

  ibiza cupra
i put mk2 172 purely because ive got one and that makes it the best car in the world lol.

edit-(dam just noticed it has the v6`s are up there)

People are just voting for what they have or the top model (V6)

That's why the 182 has so many votes. If anyone truly believes that's the best car, they need their head testing.

  renault clio 172 cup
172 cup for me, back to basics,no thrills, fast light and a challenge in the wet!

Haven't really driven anything that compares to it for so little money to be honest....

Other than arranging a group test of all the mentioned cars and driving them all before voting, how else do you propose people vote? Most people will not get a chance to buy/try them all so they'll go for the car they've owned or own.

  Megane R26
The R27 isn't different enough to the standard 197 to warrant its own category IMO.

Given that the 200 builds upon the great experience that my R27 offers me, then for me it has to be the 'best'

The V6 Mk2 is the most 'special' though IMO.

  Turbo LY R27
R27 for me. Exclusivity, LY on a 197. Recaros, all the extras. Looks awsome, quick as fook and comfortable! Driven all the rest (bar the V so i wont comment) and owned a 182 and nothing has given me so much pleasure to drive in 2 years of owning it.

haha totally agree.

182's probably the weakest out the pack imo

  172 - 249bhp @ the wheels
good idea for a thread, may as well be "which RS model do you own?"

Driven all bar the Trophy and 200, the R27 was simply in a different class to the other Clio's as an overall car. I can only guess that the 200 is even better, although the front end is questionable... lol

  Saab 93 Aero Wagon
Im with Revels. The V6 is no way the best of the breed. Its unique and stunning to look at which is why its being voted for by those who don't have one.

172 Cup for me....biased perhaps...

Of all the 1*2's, the only one that feels massively different is the Trophy. All the others are much of a muchness.

This is what f**ks me off about this place and the net in general - People believing what they have is the best since sliced! There is always something better!

Anyone with half a brain wouldnt seriously pit any of the 1*2's as better 'cars' than the new gen.....The only thing better about the old gen is that the performance for the pound coin is better!

  PH1 V6
Ph1 172 started it all... it put the clio back at the top shortly after they stopped making the williams. The models further to that where all pretty similar until the Trophy arrived and then followed but the madness of the Mk2 V6.

For me its undoubtably between the Ph1, Trophy and V6.

Ph1 has to win it though seeing as i own one lol

  Clio Mk1 Track Proj
Mine would be the Ph1 172, even though I do like the 200 in white....

Shame the Mk1 16v weren't manipulated by Renault sport and in the past decade....

  LY 200
Vee should be discounted because it's twice the price.

Totally different kettle of car aswell!

Its not even comparible to the others and thats not saying its better as if i was spending 15k i would be buying a new car or an M3.

172 Cup - Back to Basics, as said in this thread, Small light car, Big engine, no driving assitance, closest thing to the original Hot Hatches.

172 cup or Ph2 v6.
Ill go for the cup tho as its for me the pure essence of a hot hatch. No junk no nerdy expensive suspension, just the fun stuff. I got mine new cos it was as close to the old skool hatches like the mk1 golf and 205 gti and you didnt have to cover it with hammer right every month.

This, you'll never see the likes again :(

I can't get on with the idea of the cup. Lose weight, great. Best colour, perfect wheels, just spot on. But why delete abs? It's a stupid, stupid ommission, it's a genuine benefit in an emergency.

i have no reason to say any as i have no alligence. but im lucky enough to have driven all of the above in anger.

i said 197/R27, although not the fastest, it's the best handling (again open to countless arguements) it is the car that i felt so connected and really useable... out of the box

i would have said trophy for the handling, but i can honestly say the 197 matches it. here in is my problem, the 200 is even better with alot more low down torque, but its a fettled 197... still brilliant. the 172... brilliant/raw full of heart, but seen as we are keeping the vote on standard... the more recent models took all the above and carried it on, excelling everytime.

im babbling as im trying to justify my vote and various cars pop into my head as i think. warrens ph1 172, chris's acid vee, richngems cupped 182...

but every time i have been in a 197 its just felt brilliant. safe, powerful, effortless and planted (in a way that on the limit feels like you are pootling along). plus the looks, with all the RS additions it is simply stunning.

obviously people will disagree, etc. but give a fcuk.

the car i'd like to own the most out the above... Mk 2 vee, just for the occasion and bravado renault had building such a car.

cliosports... i loves you all ;)

I agree with you on 197 handing Naith. They're so much more planted than a 172. You only notice when following one and see its nice and flat through the corners and the 172's rolling a lot more.

I've not driven one but i'm keen to after following Steve back from a NW meet, he literally owned me through some roundabouts, it was damp so I think the difference may be less in the dry, but he had lots more grip. Nothing in it in the straights though.

I loved my 172 Cup, but I voted for the Mk1 V6 as it's the sort of car that is likely never to exist again, is completely bonkers, and Renault deserve massive credit for actually signing off on it. No other mainstream manufacturer has done anything remotely that insane.

172 Cup a close second - similar reasons for above really, deleting ABS and airbags = bonkers (never to be repeated bonkers, at that), I love that they can actually get these cars through all the hoops and hurdles internally and actually sell them.
