The New Phone Thread

Well Google own the updates so that would Kinda make sense. The big deal that every person misses is you can turn your phone into a pixel or any nexus with 3 minutes of work.

There is a reason my note runs better than most phones is I turned it in to a Nexus and yet retained all the stuff I wanted spen etc.
So you can turn your phone, into something running the latest Google software (months before it's released) in 3 minutes? Or are you talking about using a different launcher?

I think he's talking about using Nova launcher to make it LOOK like a Nexus/Pixel.
Last time I owned a Samsung you couldn't delete their apps so that's a mass of shite on to start with.

If you want a Nexus/Pixel then just buy one and you'll get the updates first.

Yeah I can only assume that too as I've rooted a phone before and it does NOT take 3 minutes

I quite like the new Samsung stuff they add, there is some junk- but equally a lot of good stuff. Plus there's no replacement for OIS yet I don't think. Pixel camera looks great in tech demos, however there are a lot of other videos that make it look pretty horrible in unstable conditions.

I'll probably buy a Note 8 if they release one too. I love having a cheap Moto G that I don't mind when I drop it/think I've lost it etc. But the camera is pretty piss poor compared to what's available and I'd like to have things like multi-tasking and night mode that it doesn't have. Are those few things worth £600 extra ??? Probably not tbh. What's the OP3 camera like ??? Maybe I should just get one of those..

That said, the stylus that comes with the Note phones is bloody fantastic. But I do hate the curved screens, they're so impractical no matter how cool they look while sitting on a desk.

I really want the s8 however when i think about it there is nothing wrong with my OP3 so i keep asking myself why the need to change?

I was talking about turning it in to a Nexus in everything bar the software latest updates which no one gets.

I delete/disable all the garbage and have a clean quick phone. I get all the upsides usually revolving around best camera on the market certainly until the pixel came out and spen etc.

The design in recent years also.

I wanted a pixel until they released something that looks like a 2010 smartphone. Design to me is very important that's why I always said the iPhone 6 and 7 were stunning pieces of tech but the S8 has blown everything we've know before away.

I might not even buy one but complaining about a part of the phone that can be changed software/design language inside unlike the pixel design which is stuck until pixel 2 is stupid.

Making it look like the latest version isn't the same as it being the latest version of software. However you try and phrase it. They spend several months of the year running out of date android. Whichever way you cut it, that's a negative.

Of course it is. I just don't think the latest edition of Android is the be all and end all.

Fair enough. But i updated a z5 compact I've kept as a backup phone to android 7. And it was running quicker than my S7 running the older version. All the fancy hardware in the world seems of little use to me if a technicaly inferior phone performs better.

I was obsessed with the Colette edition then they brought this out! Looks awesome but the 3 and 3t are reporting battery issues and stuff and the camera falls short of where I would want for a modern smart phone.

This seems a shame! Im not too keen on the curved edges of the Samsungs.

I was already to get one, but now having 2nd thoughts!

Just ordered a 3T in the new black, was thinking of holding out for a Note 8 but TBH, Samsung lost me as a customer with the whole Note7 QC issues (not just the battery design but the unstableness of it) and the abomination of a camera they call the Gear 360. They're worse than Apple for trying to tie you into their brand.

Plus. f**k paying that much for a phone!

I can't figure out the point of the curved edges, or the new screen format. Bit strange having an aspect ratio that most videos etc don't support

My mate has the edge 7 and I just dont get the appeal!

Curved screen looks great on a desk. But in your hand your skin naturally touches the edge of the screen and registers touches. Tres annoying.

I think the tiny bezel on the S8 will be even worse. Again, looks cool for photos. But imagine trying to use it one handed??

You'd think that they would leave the curved edges out of the touch receptive area, because as you say, you have to hold the phone by it's sides.

And then there's the utterly retarded placement of the fingerprint reader. Long, tall phone. Let's not put it in a position usable for humans. Let's put it high up. Next to the camera.

Awesome. Looks awkward to use, and you'll end up with fingerprints all over the camera lens.

  BMW M4; S1000 RR
Really don't like the position.

My Moto G has a great setup, soft buttons (which are the way forward let me tell you) and a fingerprint reader on the front.

A real selling point of the OP3 for me was the fact you can completely disable the hardware buttons and use soft buttons (and the finger print reader is purely a fingerprint reader, not a home button)

Having it on the back, in an obvious convenient spot works really well. You can grab the phone from a pocket, and it's unlocked by the time it's out. But where they've put it seems bizarre.

  BMW M4; S1000 RR
Don't you sometimes unlock your phone while it's face up on a desk? I like not having to pick the thing up.

I know you can have it on smart unlock but I have never found using my thumb that inconvenient

Yep! I my phone is on my desk on charge I will unlock it wuthought haveing to pick it up.

Anyone else recommend the 3LT? Been offered a cheap s7 (non edge) - might roll with that for a bit.

The speed of the facial recognition is crazy.

Also the phones now have edge tocuh rejection guys so I wouldn't worry about the curves and touching.

Sony solution was good for that. Double tap the screen to wake.

I need to decide on the 3t soon before the black version sells out! Need to decide if and why i want it over the S7.

Screen size much better but the phone is much bigger which can be a pain when out and about on the mountain bike. Camera is worse, but not a heavy shooter.

OS on 3T is said to be cleaner. Both run pretty fast and can handle most tasks.

Eerrrrrrrr dunno!!!!

Stunning phone the 3t in black. I'd try it out. You'll sell it 10 times over.

Need to decide before black goes! Had a quick go with the 3T today in 02 and was felt pretty compact considering it's size.

S7 (the other option) is still a pretty nice looking phone and screen is superb. Obviously it's a fair bit smaller.

S7 has better camera but 3T didn't seem too bad from few tests i did.

The new style usb connector is nice touch.

So this weekend has been a bit of a financial bomb and my Wife and I are buying a horse to replace the one she has just lost on loan.

Anyway, due to this I am returning my One plus 3T which arrived this weekend.

It's the limited midnight black 128gb edition and also has extra dash charge kit with it.

The box has been opened but phone has not been turned all. All accessories and additonal accessories are still sealed

Price is £440. It's a saving of £35 to you and it's already in UK.

If no interest I can return it - was just trying to save faffing about with sending it back across the seas!

Had a decent play with an s8 today. Wouldn't consider it a significant upgrade from an s7. It looks and feels nice, but it's no quicker (not to a noticeable degree), don't really notice the screen after a short while, and at least half the apps I tried don't actually work on it yet (Android auto, tomtom etc).
The finger print sensor is a mega r****d afterthought. Stupid location, difficult to differentiate from the camera lens, a really poor crap design.

One Plus 5 coming this summer with some mental specs. Still lacking water resistance but at the price point it'll be a flagship killer no doubt. Hopefully the dual camera lives up to the numbers it's touting!

I think the pixel 2 will still be let down in the design area although the first one has grown on me.

How quick are they at fixing software on Android? TomTom is hardly an obscure developer - I could understand some indie dev having issues, but not something as mainstream as that.

I have around 50 apps and games on my iPhone 7 and iPad. Apple issued the 64-bit only warning (finally! - welcome to 2003 architecture!) on the next release and I had 6 apps that didn't support that. Now that's down to 2. Apple is a bully and demands total conformity and allegiance to the Bitten Fruit. But s**t gets done and usually works out better for the end user. I like that.

I just hope beyond hope that they don't get rid of the Home button in future. They will of course - because every human on Earth appears to have an unrelenting urge to have zero bevel space and a display that stretches to the very corners of the phone. Apple dropped a bollock with the audio jack deletion. Please don't repeat that with the button removal - we don't need three icons at the bottom of the glass. Not now, or ever.

They actually all work, but apps on SD card have to be deleted and reinstalled. So user error, is what I'm trying to avoid saying.
