Hunting down a wiring fault on the Mrs car so gone to town on a few bits 😂 but wanted somewhere to store my electrical bits like code reader, multimeter, battery tester. At the moment theyre all thrown in various places which is not great and stresses me out trying to find them.

So ordered this from amazon purely for electrical bits.

Along with these to store the multimeter connections in. View attachment 1773413

Ordered these as I currently just have standard probes for mine which are a f**king pain.

Then I don't actually have a glow light so ordered this too 😂

View attachment 1773415

And then finally I don't own a clamp meter that does dc current so ordered this last week from aliexpress. A fair bit cheaper than amazon too

OEM Multimeter nonce 🤔

I need this in my life. At home I have various car related electronics stuff and its scattered in various cupboards/drawers and its always a proper t**t to find it all in the 5 mins panic I've usually got.

At least this way I can lose everything together. I'm going to copy. Those needle probes are great btw just make sure you never put them down on the seat, forget and sit down. I managed to shove one about an inch into my leg once and it f**king hurt.

Current clamp multimeter is nice too, how many amps can it do?
Sorry I missed that.

Weirdly both 60a and 600a 😂😂😂

Just seen it comes with a thermocouple. Nice

@Flob that tester has arrived and I am very surprised. It feels absolutely solid. I expected the typical Chinese feel of everything but it's genuinely really well built and the instructions are clear :O

Really shocked (he he he can't be that good then! Looooool)

I think my cheap Screwfix multimeter is on the Fritzl

Without someone saying "Fluke" and anally gaping me what other decent multimeters are there? @dann2707 did you get one recently from AliExpress?
One of the most reliable ones i had for a while was a parkside one, lasted ages and thats getting thrown around under lorries and diggers, broke it eventually. Currently on a draper one just now, i cant be arsed with the automatic ones and prefer with a dial

These are the bits I got also showing the size of the bag. Really happy with it, not too big but perfect for what I needed it for.

Showed the pencil case things too. Rob let me know if I'm missing anything pls @Flob

And little video of the clamp too.

I'm looking for a decent but affordable laser level. Ideally with a tripod (I guess you need one in most cases?).

Any recommendations?

I got one which looks very much like this 3-4 years ago:

Except mine was closer to £100 and didn't come with a tripod! £25 is ridiculous if it arrives and works. Tripod will be the same thread as a camera tripod and I would say they are very useful in a lot of use cases. I've also simply screwed mine to a wall before.

Correct, the one above has saved me hours of diagnostic time tracing battery drains as it will read down to a few milliamps.
There's a few video's on youtube of the some very good fault finders and they use them too.
This looks pretty bloody handy too!

Slightly cheaper link

Reading up on specs

Smoldering iron Dan! There are some wicked little ones which run off a battery now. I'll find one in a moment but they are dead handy to have with you.

Edit;
Lots available at loads of different price points. This was one of the originals and works really well, much better than you would ever expect. For car stuff when you don't want a bulky crimp or for lots of other jobs away from the workshop they are dead handy to have.

Can't see if you have any but dedicated (small) snips, tweezers, picks (for connector pins) and wire strippers are always handy to have in an electronics kit.

Can do 10mA which is maybe good enough. Under 10mA would be more useful on a lot of car stuff though. I like that it has a crude oscilloscope as they are dead handy for diagnostics work.

Lad at work has one of these and it genuinely impressive so maybe a higher resolution clamp meter and a better pocket scope would be good for an auto/electronics tool bag.

Ive got a blue point one but it's same as portasol runs off lighter gas had for nearly 20 years

Ah I didn't know that, got one of them already so wouldn't need to buy a tripod 👍

Get yourself a good crimper and uninsulated crimps/dual wall heatshrink for automotive wiring joins. Absolute game changer compared to soldered joints.

A good crimper is really useful. But sometimes soldering is still better in my opinion. A lot of the story behind crimps being better than solder don't stack up when people are using good crimp tools or good soldering technique. Much of the argument against either I reckon comes from doing each wrong.

Then people will use motorsport as an example and say F1 uses crimp. Which may very well be true but their crimp tools are 10k+. NASA for years chose solder joints over crimps on their rocket launches as a counter argument and found no disadvantages when properly done. (y)

Tested to destruction and the wiring snapped instead of pulling out of the connector. The advantage is being able to use them in tight spaces on substandard wiring if you need to where solder nedds flux and hope that it will join.

£60 set of crimpers and your set up. I used to solder everything but rarely do any now.

Thats beautifully done. I would argue that I could achieve exactly the same with solder in terms of strength and size. I can also solder faster than I can crimp so really when doing it as nicely as you've done it just comes down to preference.

I've seen people do some really shitty soldering and people so some really shitty crimping... a mong can screw anything up.

Cheers mate. Agreed ive seen both crimp and solder done well and both done equally terrible. One thing i despise are them fcuking insulated crimps, terrible in most circumstances.

Soldering still good for resuing a terminal in a fix.

Crimp defo faster though, the longest part is stripping the wire end. Id have this crimped and heatshrunk by the time your soldering iron has warmed up:LOL:

Those insulated crimps everyone uses are total w**k most of the time aren't they 😂
