The Official Cliosport.net 3D Thread

What are your views on 3D video in the home? I've seen quite a few [IMO] inaccurate views on this topic, so I thought I would post this up. Firstly, and perhaps obviously, there are four questions to consider when deciding whether or not you think it's worthwhile;

  1. Have you seen decent content, not crappy demos and broadcast TV?
  2. Have you seen it on a good 3D display?
  3. Do you get headaches?
  4. Do you give a s**t?

My story - I was of the opinion that home 3D is a gimmick, and not worthy of my time or money. However, I ended up buying a TV that just happened to have this feature. I thought it was a bonus, but also thought I'd probably never use it. Now, I am totally onboard with it. The right content, viewed in the right environment, can be otherworldly involving. Avatar 3D Blu-ray is captivating on a level that can't really be described. Basically anything CGI-based is far better that its traditional, two dimensional version. Live action stuff is mostly less convincing though, and almost always results in at least some degree off the 'cardboard cutout' feeling. Supported video games are also incredibly immersive.

Also, I personally do not suffer from any discomfort at all. My brain settles into it within a minute or so and it feels natural (again, depending on the content). Essentially, it's entirely dependent on the content and the display showing it. Crap stuff will always look crap. Good stuff on a crap display might look crap. Either way, the big film makers are signed up, so it will only improve. On the subject of glasses. I personally don't care. I can play a 3D video game for several hours, and not even be aware that I am wearing them.

What are your views and experiences? If you have the ability to use it, do you like it? Do you hate it? Have you never seen it but think it's rubbish? Have you seen a crappy demo in a shop and then told everyone you know, that it's rubbish?

BTW if you answered 'NO" to question four, then please move along to the next thread.

My only experience is from using my brothers 3DS. It gave me a bit of a headache if I am honest.

Never seen any other 3D stuff in the home.

Have seen 3d movies in the cinema.

I just don't think i am that bothered about it all if I am honest.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I didn't buy my TV with 3D in mind, but its a nice feature to use from time to time.

I don't watch much TV with it, I use it for gaming but thats about it.

I've seen quite a few TVs, I've even watched one for an hour or so in an airport lounge.

It just seems nothing more than a gimmick really, as you say.

The only time I've ever even slightly been impressed with 3D was at Ferrari world, where they have a 3D ride, i.e. watching a 3D screen while the seat moves with the movements, involving you even more. That was impressive, but in the living room? Not for me.

TBF an airport is not the best environment.

FYI I'm talking about big screen active shutter in the home. I should have been clearer.

Having bought a samsung d8000 a few weeks back i have been quite impressed with 3d in games. Still need to get a 3d film to watch though! Its a nice feature

I quite fancy a 3D TV but it would only be for the football.

Not recommended mate, in my experience. I find 3D to be pretty rubbish for any live action footage. The novelty will wear off in minutes.

To me, it's all about video games and heavy CGI movies.

D8000 here and tbh I frickin' love the 3d.

Been watching the masters in it and there's nothing gimmicky at all about it, gives you a true sense of the course and the quality was awesome, spot on. The only sport I've enjoyed in 3d.

Not keen on football, always crosstalk at the top of the image and the quality just isn't up there for whatever reason.
I never thought i'd say it but watching a new CGI movie, it would have to be in 3d all the way. The quality on the d8000 is just stupidly good, it literally stuns me everytime I watch something....I had Yogi Bear 3d (showing on Sky 3d) on today and ended up sitting through it all just for the "pleasure" you get from watching something of good quality on the D8000. I've recently sat through so much garbage that I would never chose to watch, but this TV just gets me in some form of daze!

Can anybody recommend any games (both consoles) to showcase the 3d in? I've only got Call of Duty:BO which is compatible and it's pretty shocking tbh.

Best 3d content I've watched on this set ;
Avatar (by a long way)
Alot of the Imax stuff
Yogi Bear
Rio
Resident Evil
Tin Tin

Iv'e recently purchased a 3d tv, I Have sky 3d as part of my subscription so have tested it out a little. I think it's great. Is the quality any better on a 3d blu ray player?

iirc sky only runs at 50hz and my tv goes to 600hz. I don't see the point in 3d football as it spoils it but films like avatar etc would be great in 3d.

I had a play with a room full of 3d TV's and projectors.

I wont be going out of my way to get 3D at home.

I've got the acer 5745dg laptop with nvidias 3d vision built in. I'm yet to find decent 3d content thought. Movie wise I've only tried the new transformers and there wasn't really that much depth to it. Game wise assasins creed revelations was pretty good but in order to get the fps I have to drop some of the settings sometimes to half what they where. In my experience 3d gaming isn't ready yet, but I could be wrong.

I'm not 100% sure about Sky, but the BBC broadcast in half-SBS, which is side-by-side. Two frames are shown next to each other, and the TV merges them to create one image. This results in half horizontal resolution, but actually looks much better than you would think, as the vertical resolution remains at 1080.

Blu-ray is frame sequential full 1920x1080. Some half-SBS stuff looks shockingly good, and you really wouldn't know it was half horizontal resolution if you weren't told.

Any content to recommend Roy?

How are you finding your D8000, if you haven't already I would look into getting it professionally calibrated.

I was skeptical at 1st (as you would be) but my god it improved the set 10 fold from out of the box.

I was in shock at how many things can affect the visuals/quality of the picture, just from within the room you watch it in!

I've watched umpteen football games on my Uncle's one. It's not very big right enough compared with my 50" but the experience was superb.

I have not had it calibrated professionally, but I have set it up as per the recommendations on AV Forums, and yes it looks a hundred times better than stock in every way. I love the 8000. It's a sensational TV. The only downsides to me are mild blooming in the corners in black bars when watching in low light. Ironically made worse because the bars are so bloody black to begin with! Also I find it sometimes very laggy at responding to the remote.

Content wise I'd recommend any CGI movie. Highlights for me so far have been Avatar, Despicable Me, Transformers Dark of The Moon and TinTin. For video games, Crysis 2 is very effective without being too in your face.

I have a D8000. I didn't buy it for the 3D feature, it was just something which came with the TV.

For Movies, the 3D is great. But for Sports, I wouldn't bother.

I've got Avatar 3D on my planner waiting to be watched :)

I got my first 3D 50" Plasma in 2010, and replaced it last July for a 51" 3D Plasma. My first used IR for the glasses, which had issues with sync, my current set has BT. If I had the money, I'd have Roy's set.

I've watched a dozen or so films on it, and used it a handful of times for gaming (GoW and COD). I'm still blown away by it.

I've tried the 2D to 3D convertor on normal content, but it's crap. Content is key. It's like having a HD display, and only watching SD or Pirate material, at < 2.000 kbps.

My TOP films (in no particular order) are:

Despicable Me
Christmas Carol
UP

Funnily, they are all animated which I think looks better.

It is an awesome display for console games. Makes Uncharted 3 appear to be running at 60+ fps, when it really isn't.

Roy, do you have a copy of the calibration settings you use on your D8000? I've just bought a 55" D7000 and looking for tried and tested calibrations (understand they may need a tweak)

I've watched a blu ray at my mates house and was impressed, but at the time I couldn't justify the cost. I wouldn't buy a TV purposely for it, but if I was buying one and the cost wasn't much more, I'd look into it.

Would love to try gaming but I don't own a console anyway atm, and would prefer to wait till glassless becomes more popular / cheaper.

Yeah. It's important to remember that the settings are per input, so you'll have to do this for each source you intend to use. Also I believe you have to do it separately again in 3D mode.

BTW I don't mean per device. If you route your devices through an amp ino a single HDMI on the Tv, then you only need to setup two sources - TV and HDMI 1.

Tin Tin is probably the best 3D movie I've seen  unfortunately

I rarely use 3D for films. It's brilliant for gaming though. I only recently played through the Battlefield 3 campaign in 3D and was mind blown at how amazing it looked on the level in Paris.

Cheers! get the keys to my new flat on Friday so I can finally get it setup and do some testing.

Depends on the content. Despicable Me has amazing pop-out effects. Especially during the end credit sequences. Generally pop-out is distracting though. It's not what good 3D is about. It's about depth and immersion. I haven't seen anything do it better than Avatar.

Thats the main problem with it imo. Avatar has been out a few years now and nothing has bettered it yet!

But that isn't a problem with 3D as a technology. Ultimately the filmmakers are the ones who use the technology to its best. Cameron just happens to have done an amazing job with Avatar. That doesn't mean all other content is highly inferior. TBH how much better can it really get anyway in terms of the actual immersion? Avatar is already incredibly convincing in three dimensions. You could add more pop-out cheep thrills but then people would just label it as a gimmick.

IMO it's a showcase movie for what can be done. It's how it was used that's important. As in the creative minds of the filmmakers. The actual 3D-ness of a CGI movie can't really be made anymore convincing. They are made in a 3D world anyway, and then essentially converted to 2D for regular viewing. This is why CGI stuff looks entirely believable on a 3D display, because it is 3D. Live action is where the technology needs to improve.

Hmmm, im still on the edge with this, as I have said before, my worry is getting clouding which is what you say you have Roy, which I wouldn't expect on a top of the range tv, my Sony is perfect, it's the best 2d quality tv I've seen and I'm nervous to give that up just to get 3d...

Been looking at the new es model, the replacement for the d series, has a camera on top for gestures to turn it on on and change the volume/ channel etc.

The clouding is an unfortunate side effect of the LED edge lighting, and it's a compromise for sure, but it's actually only noticeable because the blacks are otherwise so black. Also it's possible to minimise with proper setup, but it will always be there to an extent. Only visible in the corners of black bars in low lighting. It may also be less noticeable with the smaller screens - edge listing 55" can't be easy.

Overall the black levels are still better than anything else I've seen.

BTW you wouldn't be giving your up just for 3D. The Samsung panels and video processing are insanely good. I promise you 100% that the image quality will far surpass what you have now.

FYI if you do go and view one in a darkened room, be aware of calibration. Out of the box, the blooming is quite noticeable. Setup, with sensible backlighting, it becomes almost a non-issue. I'm super fussy about my displays, and I am totally happy with that small compromise. Just as a frame of reference for you of course.
