6700k is probably a smidgen younger.

it quite comfortably hits 60-70fps on a 21:9 on max settings.
i'm just finding it hard to justify the upgrade just for iracing

With my previous 6700K - I went from a GTX1080 which was a good combo in terms of balance @1440.

Then, I upgraded the GPU to an RTX3070Ti and it absolutely battered the CPU. It simply couldn't keep up and the cooling for the CPU was way more active than previous.

Ended up going down the Ryzen route and normality resumed.

Gone from an average of 60fps 1440 at medium to 120-200 1440 at ultra
It’s made worlds of difference especially with 40+ cars on the grid

Is that the 9800X3D? Makes a big difference on games that can utilise the v-cache onboard the CPU.

I saw some crazy prices being banded about and the 32GB kit I have is now £350 when I paid £100 just over a year ago.

Yup, and it is going to get worse due to forecast shortages. 😪 I did have a 192GB RAM kit lined up but that isn't happening now. I am due a full system upgrade (other than GPU) but the cost is eye watering at the moment.

If anything, I’d expect prices on pre-builds to soar once existing stock runs out because of RAM prices spiking.

AI - running large models takes s**t-tons of RAM plus devices need more onboard memory to run their AI features without going to their data connection for everything. Then you’ve got the push for graphics cards to have more memory as standard. All of this takes capacity away from conventional DRAM production as they switch to producing the very high bandwidth stuff that AI demands.

The producers aren’t massively ramping production in response because a) they are making a f**k-ton more money per unit, b) they don’t want to be caught out when the bubble bursts and c) it’s just not there without building more factories which takes time (see also point b)

That seems like quite a big PSU no? I’ve seen 5090/9800x3d builds with 1000W.
