ok so my cars been in renault for two weeks and turned out my piston rings have failed what would cause the rings to fail the engines only done 12k

thats the prob when i was giving it a toe full it smoked up s**t loads pulled over straight away oil was gone even though it was full before my journey

Have you spoken to Renault customer services, they helped me out when i had some problems with my dealer over warrenty work.

the car had its first engine in it the cambelt snapped it then had a new one put in under warranty and now the ring have gone on this one its done 12 k and its only 10 month old engine

If renault have replaced the engine, it will carry a 12 month warranty from date of installation. So they CANNOT get out of it. Unless it turns out it was oil starvation, in which case you'll probably have to prove there was oil in it to start with.

They will prob try and blame it on you Mikey rather than a fault with the engine.. Knowing what dealers are like with warrenty..

They'll wanna know if its been starved of oil at some point. Thatr the grey area they may get you on.
If its been allowed to run on no oil then they'll call that your fault.

Right if the car was in manufacturers warranty when the first engine was replaced then that engine is only covered up to the date of the last day of manufactures warranty. If how ever customer services payed for the engine then it will have 12 months parts and labour warranty.

I suppose the main problem will be that due to the fact its the rings that have gone a lot of oil would have been burnt as well which would make the oil level look lower than it was previously meaning there is no way for them to know if it was starved of oil.

When was it last serviced?

If it has full renault service history there should not be a problem, how do you know it was full of oil before the journey?? and the display on the dash isnt good enough!!! never trust them!, check it with the stick regulary aswell!

You should be covered as it has been replaced in the last 12 months

Theres no way it was full before your journey and empty when you pulled up.

You cant burn 5l of oil without noticing. Even if it just pushed it all out the breather due to compression I hope you would have noticed

I burnt away a piston crown which led to an extreme ring failure..... you could defnitely tell

Lack of oil would cause bearing damage first.

Rings will usually fail in a situation like this (i.e. standard run-of-the-mill engine) when theres debris been taken in by the engine, or improper bedding in procedure.

I would say its more likely that its debris related...

had renault phgone today and the ring shave destroyed the whole engine theyve put the request in for a new engine and ill find out tommorow what exactly is happening will keep you all posted
