thick oil/grease all over driver side front wheel



  BMW 330cd
as above dark thick oil grease stuff looks slightly dark green? anyone have any idea what it may be? only on the drivers side. car drives fine at the moment.
 
CV Boot, without a doubt! (will fail MOT, and eventually knacker the universal joint over time). Its can be a pig of a job to do yourself without metal tie wraps and something to tighten with), but its only a £10 - £20 job for a garage.

Yeah quite common, ya can regrease then cable tie them back but that's just for a short term fix. Will be allover the inside of ya wheel.

One other thing. Don't drive the car in this condition. You will kill the joint.

Mine split, so got melted together to get throught the MOT. Still holding 6months later!

jubilee clip but watch where the tightening section is as it can knock on the lower balljoint

kwik fit just quoted me 100 notes to supply and fit a cv boot. that a good price?

Depends.

Depending on how long it's been split (you can guess by how gritty/dirty the dispelled grease is) it should really be completely cleaned and repacked before fitting the gaitor.
Are they going to do this or bodge it up?

would'nt take a push bike to quick fit go to a normal garage it will be half the price

Check if the tie has broken. Very common.

Use a Jubilee clip mate NOT the Renault proper clips. Jubilee's are stronger by a mile.

Top up with CV grease before you put the clip on. Can be had from any good motorfactors for under a pound

i put mine on my old 1.2 16v with cable ties and they lasted 30k miles before i sold it, probably still on!

i usually use jubilee clips now if someone asks me to do one, they metal clips you get on them as standard are useless

If it's split, then £100's not too bad. Equally, try JMS.

i had this probloem for my MOT - the stupid guy used a cable tie - as soon as i drove out of the garage after it passed - it slipped off, grrrr my mate is gonna get some metal tie things and re pack the boot for me, was a hell of a mess on the inside of the wheel though lol and all over the wish bone!!

mine is a rite mess all over the wheel inside and out. all over the arch, dont no how long it will take to clean! this car is starting to cost me a small small fortune.
 
If you were closer Id clip it up for free. If it needed a new cv joint I could fit one for nothing. Distance is a c**t eh.

Least its not a Corsa C, they go almost every year!

I think it just caught mine last week when changing my wheels, cable tie and jobs a good un. Did the other one few years back with a cable tie, still going strong after easily 30k

Just check theres none on the inside brake pads/discs or you'll end up having ones like i had when i bought the car:

CV boots had been replaced shortly before I bought it.

Grease had gotten onto the pads and had effectivly ruined them, was still loads left on them too and the brakes at that time were shocking.
