Things to look for when buying a 172

  ex Clio 172 owner :(
Just looking at the washer ball thread...

I'm looking at buying a 53ish mk2 172 very soon.

Other than obvious faults or scratches/dents, what sort of stuff should I be checking, ie any common faults that I may overlook.

The car in question is a 53 plate mk2 172 29k miles going for £8995 which seems a little pricey but it's exactly what I want. I do infact want a 172 over a 182 so I want as new a 172 as possible.
(theres one about 100 miles away, same car, same price, just 7k miles though!)

Just need to be sure it's worth £9k, need to either haggle him down or haggle my VTS trade in up. Same thing really.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

Find out if it's an import... locking wheel nuts, alarm, etc.
"53 plate mk2 172 29k miles going for £8995" - that seems expensive.

I wasn't too bothered about colour but have to admit I really do like iceberg silver on my 2002 172:D

That does seem to be a bit on the expensive side.

I found a mint black 172 on Autotrader with 20k miles and 1 lady owner. Unfortunatley it was too good to be true at just over £7k, it was sold!

So sneeks do all imports lack alarm and locking wheel nut bolts? Any other obvious differences?

Cheers.

Most imports, will have locking bolts unless owner is a moron.

Alarms, needed for insurance are normally better than renault s**t.

Etched glass is another small thing.......

Mines an import got locking bolts & top of the range sigma alarm..........works off plip key.

If the car looks good, checks out ok, drives ok, has all the history buy it or it will be gone..................

So MANY time wasters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Private definitely.

You'd proabably struggle to find a 182 for less than 9 at a garage I reckon. The prices appear to have steadied a little....

Anyone know if the 172 alarm is CAT 1?

All 182s i've seen under 9k are non-Cup and have pretty big mileage, around 50k. I prefer 172s anyway as they're more discreet.

Sorry, only just read this thread but thankfully Steve already answered for me.

Thanks guys.

Yeah it's more expensive than I'd like but time to haggle a bit I suspect.

And yeah, it's becuase the 172 is more discreet and I just the silver. 182 silver is dull.

I've just bought Evo with the 172 buying guide, gonna swot up.

Cheers.
