Your car can be recoded to the key I think you mean mate. You can't reprogram the key fob itself.

i was more worried about the fact that 'apparently' he sold the 172, and found the key afterwards.

If this was true, and the car was sold a few auctions earlier or so, that would be an ideal chance to steal a 172 for free.

But it appears that he is a breaker, or flogs lots of keys on ebay.

Ah, that could be it. The key still started the car but wasn't unlocking it, so perhaps the fob was just reprogrammed to the c/l.

I've always assumed that the ignition barrel accepts all keys but the imobiliser will stop the car starting. But then, would this mean that any key can manually unlock a door!?!

Correct if you knew what car it was for theres nothing stopping you from using it to steal the car.

People put them in ebay because people will buy them thinking you can recode them to their car instead of paying renault £130 for a new key. But you can't.

Crikey, that's abit dodgy. Surely they should not have told you that? We all know how easy it is to track cars if you really want to. No wonder so many cars get nicked if that's how renault go on. That's a tad naughty to say the least!
