THUMBGRIP BITS ON 172 STEERING WHEEL

Look on Autotrader and Pistonheads at 172's near the cheaper end of the market and check out the interior pics.

Sweat, moisturiser creams, rings and oils seem to be the biggest culprit in erroding the rubber thumb grips.

Will have a look ;)

My 172 is an import and i've heard this could be why mine are wearing so well as there made of different materials for cars abroad so they don't melt.

Would this be right ?

I highly doubt it mate. The rubber doesn't melt away, it errodes from rubbing on your hands / fingers / thumbs over a period of time.

Can you just buy like rubber inserts or does the whole thing need recovering. I have no rubber at all and to the untrained eye I dont think you would really notice.
Cheers

its a whole new wheel, I had my 172 from new for 4 years and my steering wheel was as good as the dad I bought it. Checkout pictures of MarkCup's!!

Well it looks better with no grips compared to half/melted grips.
I just dont understand that if only the thumb grips have gone why cant you just buy new rubber inserts. O well just have to live with it!
