Its my 172 Cup, the belts on their own were about £14 for the cambelt and about £11 for the Aux I believe, certainly not much more. They were bought from Unipart a supplier I have used for many bits and altho I can't remember the belt manufacturer I did check that they are a company who supply many OEM's.

you just changed the cambelt and not the idlers and tensioner? Jesus-H-himself!!!

my brothers a fully qualified mechanic but he doesnt have the correct tools, which means hes never done on, he doesnt have the facilities and cant provide me with a gaurentee... therefor i wouldnt let him do it

Even though my mechanic i use has been a family friend for over 20 years and has had his own garage for 15years, he charges me cheap labour and i trust him in every way in his work and is a very good mechanic, but i will be taking my Cup to NWPerformance for its belts.

Like people have said, for the sake of saving £50 or so, getting the belts done at the Pro's is the way to go.

Using a 'friend in the trade' for general repairs on your car because hes cheap is all well and good, but from what i can tell, the cambelt on these is the one job that can seriously f**k you up if its not done/not done right.
Its not as if youll have to do it again anytime soon (as long as you get it done right), and the cost is nowt compared to the cost of an engine rebuild (which is the risk you run not getting it done properly).

disagree i only paid 40 for my timing tools granted its the 1.4/1.6v and dci tool.

the tool itself isnt expensive tbh.

No expert on Fiesta's but it could be possible it uses a chain rather than a rubber belt. Some manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes do, and a few more.

Dude, seriously. You had this arguement with everyone about the belts on your 1.6. If you dont have the know how and confidence to do it yourself, just spent the £400 and get them done right. A car isn't a buy and forget purchase that you can just throw bits on, it needs to be maintained. You wont have it for a few years if you dont sort it out because it'll be fucked.

Arn't a lot of the old Fiesta engines a push rod engine anyway, certainly the 1.3 Endura. Theres no saying your belts will snap. There are probably ph1 172's out there with origional belts, however they have a much higher chance of snapping due to them being over due.

Why buy a Renault Sport if you can't afford to keep it maintained. I had to pay out £550 on belts, service and engine mounts when I got mine but I knew that, and its part of owning a performance orientated car. If you don't like it buy a 1.0 Polo where you can get both belts, water pump and service done for about £250.
