Timing Belt gone... F@CK -- Advice needed ASAP please

So tonight was happily driving home when suddenly the REVs started to drop put my foot down on the accelerator more and still no luck, changed to a lower gear still nothing. Pulled into a local Shell garage and got the AA out guy had a look and the timing belt has snapped. The starter motor turns the engine over but it wont fire. When I got the car 2 1/2 years ago about 3 months later I had the timing belt done. Then 6 months ago roughly I had the head skimmed on the engine as the head went. Now the timing belt has suddenly gone?

Whats my next steps? What advice can you give me. Do I strip the top of the engine down and have a look at the valves. Whats the odds of the pistons hitting the valves.

Is it looking Grim?

Nick

Ive no idea, hes not a proper mechanic its a hobby of his so I dont think the Cambelt would have been changed :( The AA guy said that... its good practice for anything major you replace the Cam belt

It just seems daft that if the heads off for the sake of it not replacing it all.

Has the belt actually snapped or has a tensioner failed?

IIRC, fred said thats its quite uncommon for a belt to snap its usually the tensioners that go.

If you look in the tiny gap at the side of the engine and look at the timing belt its still there but it doesn't turn when you turn the key and the valves don't move. How can I get to the tensioner to check?

Gray - He's normally been fine for me hes been doing cars since he can remember so I kinda trusted him. He also did the clutch when that failed

At the end of the day, you pay cheap you pay twice. As harsh as that sounds, 99% of the time its true.

However, I'd get the car looked at before you start worrying. Where is your nearest specialist? (BTM, Birchdown, 519Automotive, Tour de Force would be my only choices)

JackJack its a 1.1 8V

Daniel I dont have the money to goto a dealer or the like (no job and all) I need to learn how to do it myself and check but no clue where to start. Only thing I can think of is taking the head off and I have no clue what to do there. I do have the Haynes manual though.

Oh fcuking hell, I thought it was a 172!

Oh in that case panic over, those things are cheap as chips to repair. I've no fcuking clue how to go about it as I have a mechanic, but honestly nothing on them engines is expensive.

Im hoping not, at worst im hoping its just a head that I could go get from a scrappy. (hoping it hasnt had the same damage obviously) I do know though the cylinder head is torqued down in a certain order this is what im mainly worried about getting this torque order right on the bolts so I dont warp the head.

I wouldn't bother replacing the head, just rebuild what you've got.

Alternatively, I bought an entire engine for £180 delivered on a pallet from a breakers in Leeds. My mechanic fitted a new belt kit to it and fitted the engine for £150. (I had a 1.1 8v that threw a hissy fit on the M6 and exploded in a shower of lumps of metal!)

Sorted!

As Daniel says lots easier on your engine you've got the haynes manual have a read of how to take off the head and see if you think you would be able to do it.

Cheers guys,

I need to sleep now as I have a Apprenticeship Interview tomorrow this is the last thing I needed on my head. I will have a full on read tomorrow and get back to you all this is not going to be fun...

should be really easy to sort that. probably just needs 8 valves and a gasket set, then a new belt and tensioner.

Just had a quick look on ebay,

Valves are £3 each

Gasket set is £20-ish

Belt kit and tensioner is £60.

If you're doing it yourself thats not a lot to worry about mate, and think of the experience you'll get!

Long shot but...

Anyone local to Warrington/st helens/ Wigan those kind of areas who has a bit of free time? That could possibly help me in either changing the cam belt and checking compression or stripping the head off? I can't follow a Haynes manual too many technical terms and very little detail in the pictures what they are looking at
