Hi,
I have scratched my Gearknob and dashboard installing ICE in the past, so heres two handy hints for doing it without damage:
1) Put a sock over the gearknob. It looks silly, but prevents the sharp metal of the headunit scratching the gearstick/knob.
2) Mask the surrounding area with electrical insulation tape. Masking tape can be too thin, and so a nice thick electrical insulation tape does a good job, while youre fiddling around the area. Pic below.
