To Cup or not?

Hi I'm currently looking for a 182 RS and have found a few I like, going to view an orange one this week!

But I occasionally come across a 182 with the Cup chassis pack, and wanted to know opinions of people who've driven both the standard setup and Cup setup.

Is it that much better with the improved steering and suspension? The car I'm keen on and going to view doesn't have any Cup features, and it looks spot on but I would prefer a 182 with Cup features if it's significantly better?

I currently drive an Active Sport Punto so expecting a drastic handling improvement no matter what!

Cheers

To be honest find one you like and if its a full fat you can always cheaply upgrade to better the spec of a cup.

I found all the cup ones had cloth interior and i wanted the half leather so ended up full fat, (think you can get the cups with nice interior i must have been just unlucky)

Just go with the car you really love forget the cup and full fat it the pros and cons weigh out each other in my eyes.

Full fat means a 182 with both cup packs, so it will already have the "full spec". A 182 without them is just a 182, not an FF.

My personal preference would be an uncupped 182 as I'd be wanting coilovers for it and there are more options if it's not cup packed. If you're going to leave it standard then get a cup packed one. 182 cups are horrid so avoid them.

Cheers yeah I was kind of thinking this, that the Cup pack would only benefit extreme track driving and to be honest I'm only likely to do a couple of track days. My Punto is currently lowered 50mm so I'm looking forward to a slightly softer ride!

And yeah love the orange colour, my favourite is probably the yellow but they are all significantly out of my budget!

Once I get a 182 I think I'll potentially look into an RS192 exhaust system, maybe a remap and some anthracite Turini's and then other then that leave it standard. Cannot wait to enjoy driving again!

EDIT: JCC what's horrid about the Cup 182's? Are you talking about ones without the luxuries like cruise control? I've seen some FF ones that look good with the same spec as a normal 182 but Cup chassis so assume they'd be best of both worlds?

+1... Exactly as that man say's imo.

^ close but reversed.

You can get the 182 cup, 182 and 182 with cup packs (spoiler and splitter pack and suspension pack - recognisable by anthracite wheels as opposed to silver).

I bought a none cup packed 182 as my intention was always to fit coileys and the bolt spacing of the none cup packed cars allows a wider choice of suspension.

Have personally never driven a cup packed 182, but the none cup packed cars are softly spring.

Doh, it took me that long to type a reply that all my points had already been made!

Cheers guys for the fast responses!

I probably wouldn't fit coilovers since my current car is so stiff I'm looking for at least a slightly softer ride, but at the same time I don't want a car that has stupid amounts of roll. Is a 182 without Cup packs likely to lift an inside rear wheel for example? That would probably tell me it's already stiff enough for me!

Yeah, I'm just not a fan of them - no climate control, auto lights/wipers, Cruise, Xenons and a 1.2 interior for not that much of a saving over one with all the toys. All IMO, of course.

Drive one with the cup suspension and one without, see what you prefer.

Cool yeah I agree with that, wouldn't want a full on basic Cup despite liking the sounds of them previously. The only type of Cup I'd look into is the FF, with the luxuries.

I'll check this orange one out this week, and tbh even without the Cup setup if I like it I'll probably buy it! Just wanted to check that I wasn't missing out on something special with the Cup setup as all the reviews are of Cups and I may not get to drive one before I buy a 182.

Cheers guys!

Not driven a cup/cupped pack but I can assure you that a non-cupped 182 is not some soft, rolly, squishy thing. It's still a pretty firm ride and doesn't roll at all.

From what I understand the differences are subtle.

Buy a normal 182. the 'cup' and 'cup packed' ones have stupid bolt spacing on the hubs and virtually no one makes coilovers for them.
The 182 cup isn't light enough to justify the loss of the air con and leather IMO.

I've driven both and there is very little to tell between the 'cup' suspension and the standard. The only things worth having are the cup spoiler and splitter, but they can be picked up on here for sensible money anyway.

How much lighter is the 182 Cup than a standard 182?

As i know with the 172 Cup they lost about 100kg didnt they?

i've got a normal 182 non cup, and i found it a bit soft tbh, lots of body roll in the corners. that said i came from an mx-5 and a zr 160 which are both extremely planted in thier own right.

Mikeofthequays: can you tell the difference with the ride height at all?

OP: I've got a non cup packed 182, and it's ride is not soft or anything. The cup pack looks better due to wider track but that's only noticeable if you really look! Just find one you like, that's what we did.

I think ride height is quite noticeable. My FF is quite stiff, can be a bit annoying, but it's very good. That said, I've not driven a non-cup version. Will see how it holds up at Silverstone in a few weekends time :)

IIRC it's supposed to be 10mm difference.

If you took close-up before and after photos you might spot a difference but I didn't. So didn't.
