Todays mods - Amp mount and trimmed A pillars (Photo Guide)

  Black Gold Trophy
Hi all, couple of mods I did today, thought id put up a rough guide to give others ideas on how to do theirs.

Hers the "before" picture, amp nicely wired, but boot is a complete mess!
212.jpg

Next I took a piece of card board to make a template for my amp mount, then cut a piece of 9mm thick mdf to size. I didnt choose 9mm thick mdf for any other reasons than it being fairly light and strong enough to do the job, and it was what I had laying around in the garage at the time :D
213.jpg

Once I knew that the piece of mdf was a good fit and I had cut out a small gap to feed the cables through, I painted some contact adhesive onto the board and covered it in some charcoal alcantara. I then pulled the excess material around the back and stapled it down.
221.jpg

I then checked out how it looked in the boot
222.jpg

Screwed the amp down on to the board (NOTE: you will need very short screws, I got mine from the Screwfix Direct.
223.jpg

Test fitted for the umpteenth time! :D Ignore the little metal bracket I put on it, it is not necessary at all, I removed mine afterwards.
To hold it in place I simply put two adhesive velcro pads on the back, and stapled a cable tie onto the back and hooked it around the top of the suspension strut. ;)

I then had a go at trimming the A pillars

Removed a pillars and unscrewed the cradles for the alarm sensors, cut a piece of alcantara to size.
235.jpg

Masked up the rubber seal that goes against the windscreen with black electrical tape.
236.jpg

Spread some contact adhesive on the A pillar
237.jpg

Carefully placed the alcantara over the A pillar and pulled the excess material over the edges.
238.jpg

Pinned in place with clothes pegs! ;)
239.jpg

Trimmed off the material that covered the rubber seal (with stanley knife)
241.jpg

Superglued excess material on the back (as you cant staple it down). Best way to do it is to put the superglue on then pin the material with a clothes peg.
242.jpg

Pealed off electrical tape covering rubber seal, if there is any excess glue, wait for it to dry (usually about 10 mins) and then pick it off with a stanley knife.

Ive thought bout doing the Pillars, Door Panels (as wearing out) and the Dash, Looks good there mate... Reckon the Dash would be a bit tricky though! Not keen on having Amps etc on show, but it seems pretty unavoidable on 182's. Lucky for me, I have a 172... So am looking to have a Sub in the Wheel Well and Amp(s) covered under the Parcel Shelf Lip. Like your work though!

Yeah I have thought about doing the dash, but I think its probably out of my depth to be honest.
I got the alcantara off ebay ages ago, luckily it is a very good match with the standard material, I think Martrim do the same stuff the colour is called charcoal.
The amp isnt actually on show, cos the parcel shelf covers it, I only took it out so I could get a good picture. I could have fitted the amp under one of the seats, but I was worried about it getting too hot.
Also the speakers are nicely hidden away under the standard grilles, and tweeters are on show but they dont look aftermarket anyway.

Cheers for the comments guys!

I did my a pillars yesterday lol, i didnt bother masking off the rubber bit though, just covered over it and ran my fingernail down the material so it sat in the groove :)

very nice, shame my dash and seat alcantara is blue and christ knows if i'd get a close enough match to have a go myself

Can some one do a picture guid for a sub to fit on the left hand side of the boot where the bit of a recess is?

Looks smart does that yoof..

I thought about making a sub enclosure like that but I didn't like the sound when the sub was facing the side of the car. I played about for ages and found it sounded best sitting on the right of the boot facing the boot door. Sounded great from the passenger seat too so a bonus.

Jack, loving the amp mount. I currently have mine on the floor and it take up too much space so will definitely be doing that!

you should have made the board on the left a bit taller and took it to the plastic trim just above it, make it sit flush with that and it would look more original. Would Blend in a bitmore then. nice job on the a pillars, Will be gettin mine flocked!

Oh right, not such a hard job to do mate, although it might cover up your boot light, you might be better off making it on the other side and mounting the amp to it aswell ;)
